Collection: Ebony Wooden Earrings

Ebony is naturally near-black. Nothing here is dyed, stained or ebonised: the colour comes out of the log that way and deepens slightly as the wood is cut and polished. That is unusual, and it is the reason Ebony has been used for centuries where black had to be permanent — piano keys, instrument fingerboards, inlay work and prayer beads.

It is also the most forgiving wood to wear. Black never argues with a rich border, a printed drape or a busy neckline, which makes an Ebony piece the safest answer when the outfit is already doing a great deal.

Ebony has been carved into prayer beads and malas across several traditions, where it is associated with grounding, strength and protection. Many people wear it as a quiet reminder to stay steady: touch the earring, take one slow breath, carry on.

We make no claims about what a wood does on its own. The meaning is the one you choose to give it, and Ebony has carried this one for a very long time.

Density. Ebony takes a sharper edge and a finer engraved line than any of the other woods we use, which is why our most exacting work tends to be cut in it — and why it appears as the inlay in so many two-wood designs, where a fine black line has to stay crisp against pale Boxwood.

The trade-off is brittleness at a fine point. An Ebony tip is beautiful and it is the part most likely to chip if a piece is dropped on a hard floor.

It also ages less than any of our other woods. It may take on a little more sheen where it is handled, but there is no meaningful colour shift to plan for.

• Kanjivaram and heavy silk: plain Ebony. Black is the one tone that never competes with a worked border.
• Cream, ivory and pastel: maximum contrast at the neckline.
• Printed sarees: keep the surface plain and let the colour do the work.
• Office and formal wear: reads as considered rather than decorative.
• Black outfits: choose a piece with Boxwood or Padauk in it, or the earrings disappear.

Is Ebony dyed or stained black?
No. Ebony grows near-black. Nothing in this collection is dyed, stained or ebonised.

Will the black fade?
No. There is no dye to fade, and Ebony is the most colour-stable of the four woods we use.

Is Ebony heavier than other woods?
It is the densest wood we work, but the difference at earring scale is negligible.

Why does Ebony appear as inlay so often?
Because it holds a fine line. A thin strip of Ebony set into pale Boxwood stays crisp in a way a softer wood would not.
