A slim drop banded on the diagonal in dark veneer over pale Boxwood.
Mayuri is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work ā fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The bands are veneer, laid onto the face. Each dark stripe is a leaf-thin strip of real wood, cut and placed onto the Boxwood body and then polished back. The colour is the wood's own, not ink or paint.
Running them diagonally rather than straight is the decision that makes the piece. Stripes down a narrow drop sit still; stripes on the slant make the shape look as though it is turning, so the earring reads as moving even when it is not.
It is also the slimmest banded drop we make ā narrow enough for a working day, long enough not to disappear.

Styling ā¾
Narrow, quiet and unfussy ā these are lightweight wooden earrings for office wear that still have something to look at up close. A plain shirt, a cotton saree, a solid kurta all suit them.
Because the drop is slim, it reads clearly with hair worn down, where a broad disc would be covered.
Looking after it ā¾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another ā the edges are where laid wood is most vulnerable.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Are the stripes painted on? ā¾
No. Each band is wood veneer ā a leaf-thin strip of real wood cut and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished back. The colour is the wood's own and cannot be rubbed off.
What does veneer mean here? ā¾
A very thin leaf of solid wood, cut to shape and laid onto the body beneath it ā the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. It is what allows stripes to run cleanly on the diagonal. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.
Can I wear these to work every day? ā¾
Yes. The drop is narrow, the pair weighs about 10 g, and there is nothing broad to catch on a collar or a dupatta.
Are both earrings identical? ā¾
Very close. The grain runs differently through each piece of wood, so the pair is matched rather than duplicated.
Will the colour fade? ā¾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
