A long pale Boxwood oval with a single small pointed motif in dark Ebony at its centre.
Premala is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The motif is veneer, laid onto the face. A leaf-thin piece of Ebony is cut to a pointed leaf shape and placed onto the Boxwood, then polished back so the surface finishes level.
One small dark shape on a large pale ground is the simplest composition we make, and the hardest to place. Set too high the oval looks top-heavy; too low and the motif slides off the shape. Centred, it reads as a seed inside a pod — the whole piece echoing itself at two scales, since the motif repeats the pointed outline of the drop that holds it.

Styling ▾
Almost plain, with one point of contrast — these are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear that still look considered. They suit a plain kurta, a cotton saree and a work shirt equally.
The pale face also sits well against dark clothing, where the single black motif picks up the colour of what you are wearing.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing — a pale wood shows a mark more readily than a dark one.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the dark motif a hole or a shape? ▾
A shape. It is Ebony veneer cut to a point and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished flush — not a cut-out, and not painted.
What does veneer mean here? ▾
A very thin leaf of solid wood, cut to shape and laid onto the body beneath it — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.
Are these quiet enough for the office? ▾
Yes. There is one small mark on an otherwise plain face, and at about 10 g the pair is light enough to forget.
Are both earrings identical? ▾
Very close. The grain runs differently through each piece of wood, so the pair is matched rather than duplicated.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
