Inlay is the slowest way to make a line

There are three ways to put a dark line on pale wood. You can paint it, which takes minutes and sits on the surface. You can engrave it, which cuts a shadow into the wood. Or you can inlay it — cut a channel, shape a strip of a second wood to fit that channel exactly, glue it in, then level the whole face back until the two woods are flush.

Inlay takes the longest by far and is the only one of the three that cannot wear away, because the black is not on the wood; it is the wood, all the way through.

The diagonals make it harder still. A line running with the grain is straightforward to cut cleanly; a line running across it at an angle wants to tear on one side of the channel. Doing several of them in parallel, evenly spaced, on a panel the size of your thumb, is the kind of work that separates handcraft from assembly.
