A pale Boxwood triangle with a broad Ebony triangle set inside it, ruled across with fine lines.

Ishika is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The piece is built in two stages. The broad dark triangle is a solid piece of Ebony, cut to shape and laid onto the Boxwood beneath it. The fine lines that rule across both woods are veneer — leaf-thin strips of wood cut and laid down one by one. Two different jobs, two different thicknesses of material, finished back to one face.

The result is a triangle inside a triangle, which is a sharper idea than most wooden jewellery attempts. There is no curve anywhere on it, and at this size it sits flat against the lobe rather than hanging — a stud with the presence of a dangler.

Styling ā–¾

A geometric stud is the easiest statement to wear to work — nothing swings, nothing catches, and the shape reads as design rather than ornament. It sits well with a shirt, a plain kurta or a handloom saree.

Because it is a stud, it also survives hair worn down, where a long drop would disappear.

Looking after it ā–¾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges are where laid wood is most vulnerable.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Are the dark parts painted on? ā–¾

No. The dark triangle is a solid piece of Ebony and the fine lines are wood veneer — both real wood at their own colour, laid onto the Boxwood. Nothing is stained, dyed or printed.

What does veneer mean here? ā–¾

A leaf-thin strip of solid wood, cut and laid onto the surface beneath it — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. It is how a line this fine can be made in wood at all. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.

Are these studs or danglers? ā–¾

Studs. The triangle sits flat against the earlobe and nothing hangs below it.

Are they comfortable for a full day? ā–¾

Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g and a flat stud puts almost no pull on the lobe.

Will the colour fade? ā–¾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
