A broad pale Boxwood oval, crossed through the middle by a single wide band of Ebony.
Sudha is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The band is Ebony veneer, laid across the face and polished back. It is a leaf-thin piece of real wood rather than paint, which is why the two edges where black meets gold are so straight on a curved face.
Placing it dead centre is a different decision from setting it high, and it does something specific: it divides the oval into two equal halves, so the eye reads the piece as symmetrical and still. Shifted up or down it would suggest movement; centred, it sits.
The band is also wide rather than fine, which keeps the design bold at a distance — this is a piece that reads clearly across a room rather than rewarding close inspection.

Styling ▾
One bold mark on a plain face — these are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear that still carry weight visually. Black and pale gold sits against almost any colour without competing.
The broad oval suits hair worn up and a simple neckline, where the whole shape is visible.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges are where laid wood is most vulnerable.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the black band painted on? ▾
No. It is Ebony veneer — a leaf-thin piece of real wood cut and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished back. The colour is the wood's own and cannot be rubbed off.
Will these go with printed clothes? ▾
Yes. There is only one mark on the earring, so nothing competes with a print.
Are they heavy? ▾
The pair weighs about 10 g. An oval this broad in metal would be felt on the earlobe within an hour.
Are both earrings identical? ▾
Very close. The grain runs differently through each piece of wood, so the pair is matched rather than duplicated.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
