A pale Boxwood oval with dark shapes cut to form and laid across its centre.

Roshini is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The dark areas are cut veneer, laid onto the face. Each piece is cut individually from a leaf-thin sheet of Ebony, placed onto the Boxwood and polished back — shapes with their own outlines rather than strips ruled across the drop.

Setting them at the centre and leaving a clear margin of pale wood all the way round is what keeps a bold motif from crowding the oval that holds it. The eye goes to the dark first, then out to the edge.

Both colours are the woods' own. Nothing is stained, dyed or painted.

Styling ▾

One strong mark on a plain pale face — lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear that still look graphic enough for an evening. Black and pale gold sits against almost any colour.

Plain cloth suits them best, where the shape at the centre can be read clearly.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges of the laid shapes are the part to protect.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.
Delivery and returns ▾

Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Is the dark shape a hole or wood? ▾

Wood. It is Ebony veneer cut to shape and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished flush — not a cut-out, and not painted.

What does veneer mean here? ▾

A very thin leaf of solid wood, cut to shape and laid onto the body beneath it — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.

Are both earrings identical? ▾

Close, but not exactly. Each shape is cut and placed by hand, so the motif sits slightly differently on one than the other.

Are these comfortable for daily wear? ▾

Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g and the surface is flush, so there is nothing to catch.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
