Mahira is built from a solid and a void. A round disc of black Ebony sits at the lobe; below it hangs an open oval hoop cut from pale Boxwood. One shape is filled, the other is empty, and the space inside the hoop is as much a part of the design as the wood around it.

That open centre does something a solid shape cannot: it lets your skin, your hair or your blouse show through, so the earring changes with whatever you wear it against. Worn with hair down it reads as a soft golden ring against dark; against bare skin it becomes an outline.

Cutting an open ring in wood

An open hoop is one of the more demanding shapes to cut in hardwood. The wall of the ring is thin, and wood has direction — at the top and bottom of an oval the grain runs across the narrowest part, which is exactly where it wants to break. It has to be cut patiently, sanded evenly on both the outer and inner curve, and finished on a surface you cannot easily reach.

Boxwood is the right choice for it. Its grain is unusually fine and close, so it holds a thin curved section without tearing out, and it takes a polish smooth enough to run around the inside of the ring.
