Black against gold, twice over

This is the highest-contrast pairing in the range: Ebony, one of the darkest woods worked anywhere, set against Maple, one of the palest. Nothing is dyed, stained or painted to achieve it — the black and the gold are simply what these two species are.

Pankhuri uses that contrast at two scales. At the ear, a whole disc of Ebony, domed and polished to an even surface with no figure to distract from its shape. Below it, the same wood again, but reduced to slender lines inlaid into the Maple star — narrow strips seated into channels cut in the pale wood, then sanded and polished back until the two woods finish level. Run a finger across the star and you feel one continuous surface, not a groove.

The star itself is cut with concave sides that draw its four points long and fine, and shaped across the face so the centre stands slightly proud of the tips. Because every piece is cut from repurposed offcuts, the Maple beneath the inlay is different in every pair.
