Two circles. A small disc of black Ebony at the lobe, and below it a larger round of pale Boxwood carrying a hand-engraved floral spray ā leaves and small blooms opening outward from a centre, cut into the wood by hand.
Look at where the engraving sits. It occupies only the lower third of the face; the rest of the Boxwood is left completely plain. That empty space is the design. A crowded disc would have been easier to make and considerably less to look at.
KalikÄ means a flower bud, which is what the motif is: not an open bloom but the moment before one.
Both colours are the wood's own. Ebony is that black, Boxwood that warm cream ā nothing dyed, stained or painted. The pair weighs 10 g.

Engraved, not printed or inlaid
The motif is cut into the surface of the Boxwood. Nothing is applied on top and no second wood is set in ā the pattern is an absence rather than an addition, and the shadow it casts is what you read as detail.
That has one practical consequence worth knowing: an engraved line cannot rub off, because there is no layer to lose. It can collect dust over years, which a soft dry brush lifts out in a moment.
Boxwood is the wood for this work. Its grain is exceptionally fine and even, so a cutting tool can turn a tight curve without the wood tearing out at the edge. Coarser timbers split along the grain and the line goes ragged. It is why Boxwood was used for engraving blocks for centuries before it was ever used for jewellery.
Why a round face is harder to engrave
On a square or a bar there are straight edges to measure a design against. A circle gives you none ā the motif has to be judged by eye against a curve that offers no reference point, and anything sitting slightly off-centre announces itself immediately. Placing the engraving low rather than centred, as here, makes that judgement harder still.

Boxwood is pale, so it shows marks more readily than a dark wood. Keep it away from oils, cosmetics and hand cream.

Please avoid it. Remove them before bathing, swimming or exercising. If they get damp, dry with a soft cloth straight away and let them air fully before storing.
ā¾Do these work with printed sarees?
Unusually well for a patterned piece. Because most of the Boxwood face is left plain, Kalika does not compete with a busy weave the way an all-over pattern would. Indigo, black, cream, mustard and rust all suit it.
ā¾What are the hooks made of?

ā¾Will my pair look exactly like the photographs?
The design will match. The grain of the Boxwood and the exact depth of the engraved lines will differ, because both the wood and the hand cutting it vary. That is the nature of engraved work in natural material.
