Look at where the engraving sits. It occupies only the lower third of the face; the rest of the Boxwood is left completely plain. That empty space is the design. A crowded disc would have been easier to make and considerably less to look at.

Kalikā means a flower bud, which is what the motif is: not an open bloom but the moment before one.

Both colours are the wood's own. Ebony is that black, Boxwood that warm cream — nothing dyed, stained or painted.

Engraved, not printed or inlaid

The motif is cut into the surface of the Boxwood. Nothing is applied on top and no second wood is set in — the pattern is an absence rather than an addition, and the shadow it casts is what you read as detail.

That has one practical consequence worth knowing: an engraved line cannot rub off, because there is no layer to lose. It can collect dust over years, which a soft dry brush lifts out in a moment.

Boxwood is the wood for this work. Its grain is exceptionally fine and even, so a cutting tool can turn a tight curve without the wood tearing out at the edge. Coarser timbers split along the grain and the line goes ragged. It is why Boxwood was used for engraving blocks for centuries before it was ever used for jewellery.

Why a round face is harder to engrave

On a square or a bar there are straight edges to measure a design against. A circle gives you none — the motif has to be judged by eye against a curve that offers no reference point, and anything sitting slightly off-centre announces itself immediately. Placing the engraving low rather than centred, as here, makes that judgement harder still.
