Kairavi is built from two elements that do opposite things. At the lobe sits a bow of black Ebony — sides curving inward to a waist, flaring again at top and bottom, with no pattern on it at all. Below it hangs a teardrop of Ebony and Boxwood in broad alternating bands.

The silence at the top is the point. With no line work competing at the ear, the eye goes straight to the stripe, and the whole piece reads as one clear idea rather than two. It is the quietest way we know to wear a bold pattern.

Neither colour is dyed. Ebony is that black on its own, Boxwood that cream, and the stripe is simply the two woods meeting.

Why a bow rather than a square

A square at the lobe would have set two straight-edged shapes against each other. The bow does something else: its inward curve at the waist answers the outward curve of the teardrop below, so the two elements belong to the same family even though one is patterned and the other is not.

It is also the harder cut. A square needs four straight edges; a bow needs two concave curves that mirror each other exactly, and Ebony is unforgiving of an uneven curve — the wood is so dark that shape is all you can read on it. There is no grain to distract the eye from a line that is slightly off.

Joined, not printed

The bands are not a pattern applied to a surface. Separate strips of Ebony and Boxwood are bonded edge to edge, and the whole block is then shaped into the teardrop — so the black runs all the way through the piece rather than sitting on it. Cut it in half and the stripe would still be there.

What makes it exacting is the seam. Each mating face has to be worked dead flat and dead square before bonding, because a joint is only as invisible as the surfaces going into it. And because a teardrop narrows to a point, the bands narrow with it — any drift in the joins shows most exactly where the wood is thinnest.
