The gulmohar drops its flame-coloured flowers across Indian streets every summer, and this pair is named for it — with reason. Padauk, the wood these are cut from, grows a deep orange-red of its own accord. No dye, no stain, no paint: the colour that matches the flower is simply what the tree produces. Boxwood provides the pale counterpoint.
The floral motif is engraved — cut into the wood surface by hand rather than drawn on top of it. That difference matters. Painted decoration sits above the material and can wear; engraving removes material, so the pattern is part of the object and cannot rub away. It also has to be right the first time, because a cut cannot be undone.

Why engraving is the harder choice
Engraving into hardwood offers no second attempt. Padauk is dense and interlocked, which makes it beautiful and makes it stubborn — cut too deep and the piece is finished, cut too shallow and the flower disappears at arm's length. Every Gulmohar carries the hand of whoever cut it, and the depth of line varies a little from pair to pair as a result.

▾Is the floral pattern engraved or printed?
Engraved — cut into the wood by hand. Nothing is printed, transferred or painted on. Because engraving removes material rather than adding a layer, the pattern cannot rub off with wear.
▾Is the orange-red colour natural?
Yes. It is Padauk, also called African Coral Wood, which grows that colour. Nothing is dyed or stained. The pale wood is Boxwood, equally untreated.
▾Why is it called Gulmohar?
After the gulmohar or flame tree, whose orange-red flowers appear across India in summer. Padauk happens to grow close to that same colour, which is what makes the name fit rather than decorate.
▾Will the colour fade?
Padauk changes rather than fades, deepening from bright orange-red towards brick red over months and years as it meets light and air. This happens to all Padauk and most people prefer the matured colour. Storing the pair out of direct sunlight slows it.
▾Will the engraving wear away?
No. Engraved lines are cut into the wood, so there is no surface layer to lose. Dust can settle in the lines over time — a soft dry brush clears it.
