A plain Boxwood oval with a small dark flower laid onto its face.

Latika is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The flower is veneer, cut to shape and laid on. Each petal is cut from a leaf-thin piece of Ebony and placed onto the Boxwood, then the whole face is polished back. It is the only ornament on the piece — the rest of the oval is left entirely plain.

Cutting a flower this small from veneer is harder than it looks. The shape has curves rather than straight edges, and every one has to be cut cleanly before it is placed, because there is no carving back once it is down.

Set near the top of the oval rather than the middle, it leaves most of the pale face empty — which is what keeps the piece quiet enough to wear every day.

Styling ā–¾

A small motif on a large plain face is the most wearable kind of decoration — these work as lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear and still have something to notice up close.

The pale oval suits cotton, linen and handloom particularly well, where the floral note sits naturally against a woven border.

Looking after it ā–¾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges of the motif are the vulnerable part.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing — a pale wood shows a mark more readily than a dark one.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.
Delivery and returns ā–¾

Free shipping on prepaid orders within India. Dispatch in 2–3 working days; delivery 2–3 days to metro cities and 5–7 days elsewhere in India. Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Is the flower painted or carved? ā–¾

Neither. It is cut from Ebony veneer and laid onto the Boxwood face, then polished back. The black is the wood's own colour.

What does veneer mean here? ā–¾

A very thin leaf of solid wood, cut to shape and laid onto the body beneath it — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.

Are both earrings identical? ā–¾

Close, but not exactly. Each flower is cut and placed by hand, so the petals fall a little differently on one than the other.

Are these suitable for everyday wear? ā–¾

Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g and the design is small enough not to look dressed up.

Will the colour fade? ā–¾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
