A broad pale Boxwood oval, crossed by a single bold chevron in black Ebony.
Urmi is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The chevron is Ebony veneer, cut to shape and laid onto the face. It is a leaf-thin piece of real wood, placed and then polished back — which is what keeps the point of the V sharp. Cut from solid wood, an angle like this would have to be worked by hand on both arms; cut from a leaf and laid down, it stays crisp.
A chevron pointing downward does something a straight band cannot: it draws the eye to a single point at the bottom of the drop, so a wide oval reads as though it is narrowing. It is the reason this shape flatters despite its width.

Styling ▾
One strong geometric mark on a plain pale ground — these are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear that still look graphic enough for an evening.
Black and pale gold behaves as a neutral, so a bright silk, a printed cotton and a plain shirt all work. Hair up shows the chevron clearly.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the point of the chevron is the part to protect.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the chevron painted on? ▾
No. It is Ebony veneer — a leaf-thin piece of real wood cut to the shape and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished back. The black is the wood's own colour.
What does veneer mean here? ▾
A very thin leaf of solid wood, cut to shape and laid onto the body beneath it — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. It is what keeps the point of the chevron sharp. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.
Will a broad oval suit a round face? ▾
The chevron helps. Pointing downward, it draws the eye to a single point at the base of the drop, so the shape reads as narrowing rather than widening.
Are they heavy? ▾
The pair weighs about 10 g. An oval this broad in metal would be felt on the earlobe within an hour.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
