A pale Boxwood oval with diagonal striping worked across one corner and the rest left plain.

Bhavna is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The stripes are Ebony veneer, laid onto the face. Leaf-thin strips of real wood are cut and placed onto the Boxwood and the surface polished back, so the lines are wood rather than ink and finish level with the ground around them.

Confining them to one corner rather than ruling the whole face is the idea. Across the full oval the stripes would read as a pattern and the shape would disappear behind them; held in one corner they behave like a mark on an otherwise empty surface — the rest of the Boxwood is allowed to stay plain, and the eye goes straight to the one busy area.

Details ▾

Woods: Boxwood body with Ebony veneer, responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods.

Construction: cut veneer, laid and polished back.

Form: broad oval drop with striping across one corner.

Pair weight: about 10 g.

Findings are metal alloy. Sold as one pair.

Handcrafted in Kolkata, India.

Styling ▾

Mostly plain with one worked area — these are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear that look designed rather than decorated. They suit a solid-colour kurta, a plain saree or a shirt.

Because the striping sits off-centre, the pair reads differently depending on which way the drop turns, which keeps a simple shape from looking static.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges are where laid wood is most vulnerable.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Are the stripes painted on? ▾

No. Each stripe is Ebony veneer — a leaf-thin strip of real wood cut and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished back. The colour is the wood's own.

Why is only part of the earring striped? ▾

Because a mark reads more clearly against empty space than against more pattern. Leaving most of the Boxwood plain is what makes the striped corner the thing you notice.

Are these comfortable for daily wear? ▾

Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g, and there is no fine detail to catch on a dupatta or a collar.

Are both earrings identical? ▾

Very close. The grain runs differently through each piece of wood, so the pair is matched rather than duplicated.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
