Collection: Boxwood Wooden Earrings

Boxwood is naturally pale gold. Nothing here is bleached or stained: it comes out of the log that colour and deepens as it is cut, worked and polished. The warmth you see is what happens to the wood under a tool, not what happens to it in a dye bath.

It is exceptionally close-grained — so tight that the surface reads almost like ivory once polished. That is why Boxwood was historically chosen for printing blocks, instrument parts and fine carving: it holds a line that a coarser wood would tear.

Boxwood is the wood we engrave on. A hand-cut floral or a dense scroll needs a surface that will not split or splinter as the tool turns, and very few woods will take that. It is also the ground for most of our Ebony inlay, because a pale close-grained face is what makes a fine black line read crisply.

So the majority of our most detailed work is in Boxwood, not by preference but by necessity.

It warms slowly toward a deeper amber over years. On two-wood pieces where Boxwood meets Ebony, that tends to sharpen the contrast rather than soften it.

• Dark drapes — black, maroon, indigo, deep green: the pale gold reads as a clean point of light near the face
• Handloom, cotton and linen: the natural home for this wood
• Denim and earth tones: warm against cool blue
• Cream and ivory: choose a piece with Ebony inlay, or the earrings blend away

Is Boxwood dyed or bleached?
No. It grows pale gold and deepens with working and polishing.

Why is so much engraving done on Boxwood?
Because its grain is tight enough to hold a fine cut line without tearing. Coarser woods splinter as the tool turns.

Will the pale colour darken over time?
Slightly, over years. It warms rather than fades, and there is no dye to lose.
