A small Boxwood disc engraved with a whole garden of flowers — many kinds, no two the same, packed to the rim.
Vatika is the Sanskrit word for a garden. Not a single bloom repeated as a pattern, but a crowd of different ones: broad open daisies, small five-petalled flowers, buds not yet open, leaves and stems threading between them, and a stippled ground filling every gap.
The disc is roughly 3 cm across and the pair weighs about 5 g — the lightest and smallest engraved piece we make.
A repeating motif is the easy way to fill a surface. Cut one flower, cut it again, cut it again — the hand learns the shape and the work speeds up.
Vatika is not made that way. Every bloom on the face is a different flower at a different size and angle, which means the hand never settles into a rhythm. Each one has to be composed against its neighbours as it is cut, so the garden reads as full rather than crowded, and so no two areas of the disc look alike.
Fitting that into 3 cm is the difficulty. The blooms have to stay legible as separate flowers at a size where a slightly heavy line would merge two of them into a blur — and the stippled ground between them, hundreds of small dots, has to sit close enough to look dense without touching the petals it surrounds.
The depth of the cut is what gives the piece its colour. Engraved lines hold shadow while the raised petals catch light, so a single wood in a single tone reads as two.
Boxwood is the classical engraving wood. It is dense and exceptionally close-grained, and for centuries it was the timber engravers chose precisely because it holds fine detail without the fibres tearing along the grain. At 3 cm, on work this dense, nothing else would hold the line.
This is the lightest pair in the range — half the weight of most of what we make, and a small fraction of what a 3 cm metal disc would weigh.
That matters more than it sounds. The reason people stop wearing earrings by evening is almost never the look; it is the drag on the lobe. At 5 g there is essentially nothing to drag. Vatika is the pair to reach for on the day that starts at seven and ends at eleven.
Every day. Small, warm and detailed enough to be noticed close up without announcing itself across a room. This is an everyday earring rather than an occasion one.
At the office. Nothing swings, nothing catches on a collar or a scarf, and the scale stays quiet in a meeting.
With a saree. A small round reads clearly with the hair up or down. Warm wood suits cream, off-white, rust, mustard, olive and terracotta; cotton, khadi, linen and handloom especially.
With a kurta or western wear. Keep the fabric plain — a floral surface against a floral print is one pattern too many. Solid ivory, ochre, white, olive and denim all give it room.
Because it is small, this is one of the few designs here that sits comfortably alongside a fine chain or a second piercing.
Boxwood — a single responsibly repurposed hardwood, and the classical engraving timber. It is dense and exceptionally close-grained, which is what lets detail this fine be cut at this size without the fibres tearing.
Garden, in Sanskrit. The engraving is a garden rather than a pattern — many different flowers together rather than one bloom repeated.
Engraved — cut into the surface of the wood by hand. Nothing is printed, transferred or stuck on. The pattern has real depth, which you can feel with a fingertip.
A repeat lets the hand learn one shape and cut it again and again. Here every bloom is a different flower at a different size and angle, so each one has to be composed against its neighbours as it is cut. The hand never settles into a rhythm.
Yes. The honey tone is Boxwood's own, deepened by the cutting and polishing. Nothing on Vatika is dyed or stained.
The disc is approximately 3 cm across — the smallest round we make, and an everyday size rather than a statement one.
About 5 g for the pair. That is the lightest thing in the range, and a small fraction of what a 3 cm metal disc would weigh.
No. The pattern is cut into the wood rather than applied on top of it, so there is nothing raised for daily wear to rub off.
A soft, dry cloth after each wear, and a soft brush for the engraved lines if dust settles in them. No water, no soap, no alcohol-based cleaner.
Metal alloy, with a metal ring joining the hook to the disc. If your ears react to particular metals, please write to us at reachchandrakalakriti@gmail.com before ordering and we will tell you exactly what we know rather than guess.
Yes. At 3 cm this is one of the few designs in the range small enough to sit comfortably beside a fine chain or a second piercing, where a statement drop would compete.
Unusually so. Most people stop wearing earrings by evening because of the drag on the lobe rather than the look — and at 5 g there is essentially nothing to drag.
The design will match, but the cutting will be its own. Every disc is engraved by hand, so the arrangement and depth of the flowers shift slightly from pair to pair — more so here than on a repeating pattern, because nothing is standardised.
Boxwood is a dense, hard-wearing timber, historically chosen by carvers precisely because it holds fine detail without splitting. Handled with ordinary care — not dropped onto tile, not left sitting in water — Vatika is made for repeated wear over years.
Please avoid it. Take them off before bathing, swimming or exercising. If they do get damp, dry them at once with a soft cloth and let them air fully before storing.
Both. A small engraved round works against handloom and cotton sarees as naturally as it does with linen, denim or a white shirt.
Yes — one of the easiest in the range to give, since a small round suits almost everyone and there is no length, colour or scale to judge. Every pair is quality-checked and packed in premium protective packaging.
