Flora is 3 cm across and weighs about 5 g the pair. Most of the disc is bare wood — domed, polished, and showing its own grain. The flowers gather at the lower edge and curve upward, thinning as they climb, so the engraving reads as a garden growing along a rim rather than a pattern laid over a circle.

The empty part is the design

It would have been easy to cover this whole face. Choosing not to is what makes the piece work.

Boxwood has a fine, quiet grain that a dense pattern hides completely. Leaving the centre bare gives that grain somewhere to show, and gives the eye somewhere to rest — so the engraved flowers read as detailed rather than busy. The two halves of the disc are doing different jobs: one is wood, one is work.

The border is also deliberately uneven. It is not a ring running the whole way round; it is weighted to one side and tapers off as it rises, which means there is no symmetry to check the cutting against. A ring can be measured. A sweep like this has to be judged by eye as it is cut, and the point where the flowers thin into bare wood has to feel gradual rather than abrupt.

Cut, not printed

Every flower, leaf and petal is engraved by hand into the surface of the wood. Nothing is printed, transferred or applied on top — which is why the pattern has real depth you can feel with a fingertip, and why it cannot rub away with wear. A cut line has no raised surface to abrade.

The warm honey tone across the disc is Boxwood's own, deepened by the cutting and polishing. Nothing here is dyed or stained.

With a kurta or western wear. Keep the fabric plain — a floral surface against a floral print is one pattern too many. Solid ivory, ochre, white, olive and denim all give it room.
