Madhulika means nectar. It is the right name for this piece, because nectar is the thing the engraving is really about: it is what draws the butterflies to the flowers, and it is the reason the two belong on the same surface.

The disc is roughly 4 cm across, hanging from a plain hook. There is no second element and no colour contrast. Everything happens on the surface.

Engraved to the very edge

Most engraved jewellery places a motif in the middle and leaves the rest plain — a flower centred on a disc, framed by empty wood. Madhulika does the opposite. Blooms, buds, leaves, butterflies and stippled ground run right out to the rim on every side, so the pattern reads as a fragment cut from something larger rather than a design placed on a circle.

That is much harder to execute. A centred motif can be positioned once and worked outward, and any wobble at the edges is hidden by the plain border. Cover the whole face and there is no border to hide in: the cutting has to stay clean all the way to the point where the surface curves away, on a disc small enough to sit in a palm.

The butterflies are the most demanding part of it. A petal is a broad shape and forgiving of a heavy line; a wing is not. Wings need fine, even strokes to read as membrane rather than as leaf, and they sit among the flowers rather than apart from them — so the eye has to be able to separate insect from bloom in a composition where everything touches.

The depth of the cut is what gives the piece its colour. Engraved lines hold shadow while the raised surfaces catch light, so a single wood in a single tone reads as two — pattern in the recesses, warmth on the face.

Boxwood is the classical engraving wood. It is dense, pale and exceptionally close-grained, and for centuries it was the timber engravers chose precisely because it holds fine detail without the fibres tearing along the grain. Work this dense — petals, stamens, stippling, leaf veins and butterfly wings, all within a few centimetres — is only possible on a wood that fine.

How to style Madhulika Wooden Earrings

With a saree. A round is the friendliest shape a saree can take — it reads clearly with the hair up or down, which a long drop does not. Warm wood suits cream, off-white, rust, mustard, olive, maroon and terracotta; cotton, khadi, linen and handloom especially.

With a kurta. Keep the fabric plain. A floral surface against a floral print is one pattern too many — solid ivory, ochre, olive or white lets the engraving show.

Everyday and at the office. At 4 cm this is a noticeable earring without being a long one. Nothing swings past the jaw, so it stays practical for a working day.
