The form is a single leaf, tapering to a point, hanging about 5 cm from the ear. A midrib runs its full length with angled veins branching off on both sides, each one a channel cut into the pale wood and then filled with deep blue.

Cut first, then coloured

This matters for a practical reason as much as an aesthetic one. Colour applied to the surface of wood sits proud of it, and anything raised eventually abrades with daily wear. Colour held below the surface in a cut channel has no exposed edge to rub away.

It is the same principle as inlay, with pigment in place of a second wood. It is also two operations rather than one: the carving has to be right first, because a cut cannot be undone, and only then does the colour go in. A midrib running the entire length of a leaf is the unforgiving version of that work — there is no short stroke to hide a wobble in, and the line has to stay true from the crown to the tip.

Why navy on Boxwood

Boxwood is pale, dense and exceptionally close-grained — historically the wood carvers reached for when they needed fine detail to hold. That tight grain lets a narrow channel be cut without the fibres tearing, and keeps the colour crisp inside it instead of bleeding along the grain.

Navy against warm gold is a cooler pairing than most of what we make. Where red would read as festive, blue reads as quiet — which makes this an easier piece for an ordinary working day, and an unusual one against indigo, denim and handloom blues.

How to style Ahana Wooden Earrings

With a saree. Navy and gold sit beautifully against indigo, denim-blue, cream, off-white, grey and black — cotton, khadi, linen and handloom drapes especially. At 5 cm the drop reads clearly with the hair tied back and stays wearable with it loose.

With a kurta. Keep the fabric solid so the veining stays legible. Ivory, indigo, slate and white all give it room.

At the office. This is the calmer of our leaf designs. Navy is a working colour, and a 5 cm drop is long enough to be noticed without being the loudest thing in a meeting.

With western wear. A white shirt, linen, denim, neutral co-ord sets. Blue on pale wood reads as contemporary rather than ethnic.

The design will match, but the cutting will be its own. Every leaf is carved by hand and the Boxwood grain differs in every offcut, so the depth and spacing of the veins shift slightly from pair to pair.

Are wooden earrings durable enough for regular wear?

Boxwood is a dense, hard-wearing timber, historically chosen by carvers precisely because it holds fine detail without splitting. Handled with ordinary care — not dropped onto tile, not left sitting in water — Ahana is made for repeated wear over years.

Can they get wet?

Please avoid it. Take them off before bathing, swimming or exercising. If they do get damp, dry them at once with a soft cloth and let them air fully before storing.

Do these suit sarees, or western wear too?

Both. Navy on pale wood works against handloom and cotton sarees as naturally as it does with a white shirt or denim.
