A dark domed disc at the ear, and below it an Ebony teardrop banded across the shoulder in pale Boxwood.
Mahua is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The bands are separate pieces of wood, joined. Strips of Boxwood and Ebony are cut and bonded one above the next, then the teardrop is shaped and polished back as a single piece — so every line across it is a join between species rather than a mark laid on a surface.
Putting the banding at the top and leaving the lower two-thirds plain black is the decision that makes this piece read as weighted. The pale stripes sit where the drop is widest and then stop; below them the Ebony runs uninterrupted to the point.
It is one of the darkest pieces in the range, which is unusual for wood — and the reason it holds its own against a heavy silk.

Styling ▾
Predominantly black, which makes these statement wooden earrings for festive wear that behave almost like a neutral — a bright silk, a deep-toned saree or a black dress all take them.
Wear with hair up so the banded shoulder is visible; it is the part that distinguishes the pair from a plain dark drop.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Keep it dry — take it off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the black wood dyed? ▾
No. It is Ebony, a wood that is naturally this colour — dense enough to sink in water and used for violin fingerboards. Nothing is stained or dyed.
Are the pale bands laid on the surface? ▾
No. They are joins. Separate pieces of Boxwood are cut and bonded between the Ebony, then the whole drop is shaped and polished back as one piece.
Do these work with black clothes? ▾
Yes. A mostly dark earring reads cleanly against black, where an all-pale one can look disconnected.
Will a teardrop this size be heavy? ▾
The pair weighs about 10 g. The same drop in metal would be felt on the earlobe within an hour.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
