A dark Ebony disc at the ear, and below it a Boxwood square worked in a basket weave.
Bhuvana is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The square is divided into blocks, each filled with close parallel bands running at a right angle to the blocks beside it — the arrangement of a woven mat or a parquet floor.
The bands are veneer, laid onto the face. Leaf-thin strips of wood are cut and placed one at a time, then the whole square is polished back. The pattern is built up rather than carved out, which is what allows this many fine lines to meet cleanly at the block edges.
It changes as you move: light falling across the square catches some blocks along the grain and others across it, so one set always reads brighter than the next, and they swap as you turn your head.

Styling ▾
A dense woven surface wants plain cloth beside it — a solid kurta, a plain silk, a shirt. These are statement wooden earrings for festive wear that still read as modern rather than ornate.
Wear with hair up and skip the necklace; the square fills the space between the ear and the collarbone.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges are where laid wood is most vulnerable.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the woven pattern printed on? ▾
No. Each band is wood veneer — a leaf-thin strip cut and laid onto the surface, then polished back. The pattern is wood, so it cannot fade or wear off.
What does veneer mean here? ▾
A very thin leaf of solid wood, cut to shape and laid onto the body beneath it — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.
Why does the pattern seem to shift? ▾
Because the blocks run at right angles to each other. Light catches some along the bands and others across them, so one set always looks brighter, and they change places as you move.
Will a square this size be heavy? ▾
The pair weighs about 10 g. The same panel in metal would be felt on the earlobe by the end of an evening.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, the woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
