A black Ebony square set on its point, and below it a Boxwood disc crossed by a diagonal lattice.
Kalyani is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
Two shapes, set against each other deliberately. The upper piece is a square turned forty-five degrees so it hangs on its point — all straight edges and sharp corners, in near-black. The lower is a circle in pale gold, with a lattice of fine dark lines running corner to corner across its face in a diamond grid.
The grid is the link between them. It repeats the diamond of the square above, scaled down and multiplied, so the two halves of the earring are saying the same thing in two different sizes. That is why the pair holds together rather than reading as two unrelated pieces on one hook.

Styling ▾
The near-black upper element does something useful: it anchors the earring to dark clothing, so this pair works with black and deep colours in a way that an all-pale wooden earring does not.
The lattice is fine enough to read as texture rather than pattern from across a room, which keeps the piece from looking busy. It suits a plain saree, a solid kurta and tailoring equally.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the black square real wood or painted? ▾
Real wood. It is Ebony, which is that colour on its own — the same wood used for violin fingerboards. Nothing here is stained or dyed.
Is the lattice drawn on the disc? ▾
No. The lines are worked into the wood, not printed across it, which is why the grid catches the light differently as the disc turns.
Will they be heavy on my ears? ▾
The pair weighs about 10 g. Two elements this size in metal would be felt through an evening; in wood they are not.
Do these work with black clothes? ▾
Yes — better than most wooden earrings. The Ebony element gives the pair something dark to sit against, so it does not float the way an all-pale earring can on black.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
