The form is a single leaf, tapering to a point, hanging about 5 cm from the ear. A midrib runs its full length with veins branching off on both sides, each one a channel cut into the pale wood and then filled with colour.

Two colours in one leaf

Most of our carved-and-filled designs take a single colour. Ankhia takes two — yellow and green worked into the same cut lines, so the veining shifts as it runs down the blade rather than holding one tone throughout.

That doubles the work at the filling stage. Each channel has to be filled cleanly without one colour creeping into the next, on lines narrow enough that there is very little room for error either side. A single-colour fill can be worked in one pass; two cannot.

Cut first, then coloured

The colour on Ankhia sits inside the wood, not on top of it. That matters for wear as much as for looks: anything applied to the surface stands proud and eventually abrades, while colour held below the surface in a cut channel has no exposed edge to rub away.

It is the same principle as inlay, with pigment in place of a second wood. It is also two operations rather than one — the carving has to be right first, because a cut cannot be undone, and only then does the colour go in. A midrib running the entire length of a leaf is the unforgiving version of that work: there is no short stroke to hide a wobble in.

Why Boxwood

Boxwood is pale, dense and exceptionally close-grained — historically the wood carvers reached for when they needed fine detail to hold. That tight grain lets a narrow channel be cut without the fibres tearing, and keeps each colour crisp inside it instead of bleeding along the grain. On an open-grained timber, two colours this close together would run into one another.

How to style Ankhia Wooden Earrings

With a saree. Yellow and green on warm gold is a summer palette. It sits beautifully against mustard, olive, bottle green, cream, off-white and turmeric — cotton, khadi, linen and handloom drapes especially. At 5 cm the drop reads clearly with the hair tied back and stays wearable with it loose.

With a kurta. Keep the fabric solid so the veining stays legible. Ivory, olive, mustard and white all give it room.

For daytime and festive wear. Green and yellow carry Basant, Haldi functions, Poila Boishakh and daytime celebrations, where a red palette can feel heavy.

With western wear. Linen, denim, white and earth tones. The leaf form is soft enough to read as contemporary rather than costume.

Boxwood is a dense, hard-wearing timber, historically chosen by carvers precisely because it holds fine detail without splitting. Handled with ordinary care — not dropped onto tile, not left sitting in water — Ankhia is made for repeated wear over years.

Can they get wet?

Please avoid it. Take them off before bathing, swimming or exercising. If they do get damp, dry them at once with a soft cloth and let them air fully before storing.

Do these suit sarees, or western wear too?

Both. Yellow and green on pale wood work against handloom and cotton sarees as naturally as they do with linen or denim.
