A plain black Ebony disc at the ear, and below it a long bar striped down its length.

Salmali is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The woods are joined, not drawn. Separate pieces of Boxwood and Ebony are cut and bonded edge to edge, then the bar is shaped and polished back as one piece — so the dark line down it is a join between species, not a mark on a surface. Nothing is stained, dyed or printed.

The bar is longer and narrower than anything else we hang from a disc, and the proportion is the point: a disc wide enough to be noticed, a drop slim enough that the length never becomes bulk.

Running the stripe lengthwise rather than across keeps it reading as one continuous line from the top of the bar to the bottom.

Details ▾

Woods: Boxwood and Ebony, responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods.

Construction: the two woods cut, joined edge to edge and polished back.

Form: plain Ebony disc above a long striped bar.

Pair weight: about 10 g.

Findings are metal alloy. Sold as one pair.

Handcrafted in Kolkata, India.

Styling ▾

Long, slim and in two neutral tones — these are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear with enough length for an evening. The dark disc anchors the pair against black and deep colours.

The narrow bar stays visible with hair worn down, where a wide drop would be covered.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry — take it off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.
Delivery and returns ▾

Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Is the dark stripe painted on? ▾

No. It is Ebony joined to the Boxwood and polished back. Both colours are the woods' own, so the stripe cannot fade or rub off.

Is the black disc real wood? ▾

Yes — Ebony, the same wood used for violin fingerboards. It is that colour naturally and is left plain and polished.

Are long wooden earrings comfortable for daily wear? ▾

These are. The pair weighs about 10 g and the bar is narrow, so there is nothing broad to swing or catch.

Do these work with black clothes? ▾

Yes. The Ebony disc gives the pair something dark to sit against, so it reads clearly on black.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
