A round disc hung from a fine ring, its pale face worked with a hand-engraved motif in dark relief.

Pallavi is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The disc hangs free from a small ring rather than sitting fixed against the lobe, so it swings and turns as you move. The face carries the decoration; the dark and the pale play against each other across it.

Engraved work is the slowest thing we make and the least reproducible. A moulded earring is identical a thousand times over. A cut one is not: the hand that made yours made it once, and the small differences between one disc and the next are the record of that.

Styling ▾

A hanging disc is a forgiving statement shape — round, unpointed, and it turns rather than staying rigid, which keeps it looking soft even at this size.

It suits handloom and khadi particularly well, where a hand-cut surface sits naturally against a hand-woven one. With plainer, more tailored clothes it becomes the single decorative thing you are wearing, which is the easiest way to use it.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the design printed on? ▾

No. It is cut into the wood by hand. There is nothing lying on the surface that could scratch off or wear away with use.

Are both earrings identical? ▾

Close, but never exactly. Each disc is engraved by hand, so no two faces fall quite the same way.

Will they be heavy on my ears? ▾

The pair weighs about 10 g. A disc of this size in metal would pull on the lobe; in wood it does not.

Which woods are these? ▾

Boxwood and Ebony. Both colours are the woods' own — nothing is stained or dyed.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
