A pale Boxwood oval with a sharply angular shape in dark Ebony set into its centre.

Nalika is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The dark shape is veneer, cut and laid onto the face. A leaf-thin piece of real Ebony is cut to the form, placed onto the Boxwood and polished back — which is why a shape with this many corners holds its edges cleanly.

The design is a contradiction on purpose: an oval is the softest outline there is, and the shape inside it is all angles and points. Set one inside the other and each makes the other more noticeable — the curve reads smoother, the angles read sharper.

A broad margin of plain Boxwood is left all the way round, which stops the inset from crowding the shape that holds it.

Styling ▾

Soft outline, sharp centre — these are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear with enough going on to carry an evening. Plain cloth suits them best, where the inset can be read clearly.

Black and pale gold behaves as a neutral, so colour is not a problem; pattern is, so keep prints for another pair.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the points of the inset are the part to protect.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Is the dark shape a cut-out? ▾

No. It is Ebony veneer cut to shape and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished flush — wood rather than a hole, and not painted.

What does veneer mean here? ▾

A very thin leaf of solid wood, cut to shape and laid onto the body beneath it — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. It is what keeps the corners of the inset sharp. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.

Are these comfortable for daily wear? ▾

Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g, and the surface is flush so there is nothing to catch on a dupatta or a collar.

Are both earrings identical? ▾

Close, but not exactly. Each inset is cut and placed by hand, so the margin around it varies a little from one to the other.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
