Collection: Round Wooden Earrings

Worth saying plainly, because the two get confused. A hoop or bali is a ring: open in the middle, with the wood forming the rim only. A disc is solid all the way through — a complete circular face with no hole.

Almost everything in this collection is a disc, and that solid face is the point. It gives the artisan a surface to work on, which is why our most detailed engraving and inlay work appears on round pieces rather than on rings.

A circle has nowhere to hide. Every other silhouette has a straight edge, a corner or a point that draws the eye and breaks the outline — a disc has one continuous curve, so any flat spot or slight oval shows immediately, and it shows more once the piece is hanging and moving.

Then there is the pair. Two discs hang side by side at eye level, which makes them the easiest shape for a wearer to compare. They have to match.

• Hand-engraving — lines cut into the surface. On a domed face this is considerably harder, because the surface falls away from the tool in every direction.
• Ebony inlay — a channel cut into the disc and a second wood set inside it, polished flush. Tulika carries an inlaid Ebony ring around its full circumference, which has to hold constant width through 360 degrees.
• Carving and filling — lines cut first, then colour worked down into them so it sits below the surface.
• Plain shaping — where the grain is the design.

What is the difference between a disc earring and a hoop?
A hoop or bali is a ring with an open centre. A disc is solid throughout, with a complete circular face.

Are all the earrings here fully round?
Not all. Some are a single disc; in others the round form is the upper or the lower half of a two-part design.

Are round wooden earrings good for everyday wear?
They are the most practical shape we make — no points to chip, nothing to snag.

Will the two earrings match exactly?
The shape will. The grain will not — no two pieces of wood carry the same figure.
