Jaya is Sanskrit for victory — and this is a shape that holds itself like one. A diamond standing on its point, sharp at the top and sharp at the bottom, 4 cm across, with nothing hanging and nothing swinging.

The body is Ebony, and the upper half is left entirely plain. Across the lower half run two stripes of Boxwood, joined edge to edge into the Ebony so that the pale gold reads as bands cutting horizontally across the point. The stripes are not painted on. They are separate pieces of wood bonded in, so the colour goes all the way through.

The faces are not flat. Each one is worked with a gentle hollow that runs to a ridge, so the surface catches light differently as you move — near-black at one angle, warm and almost metallic at another. In daylight the Boxwood in particular throws a good deal of light back, which is why it can look brighter in a photograph than it does in the hand.

Why a banded point is difficult

Joining bonds separate strips of wood into one block, which is then shaped as a single object. Every mating face has to be worked dead flat and dead square first, because a join is only as invisible as the surfaces going into it. A gap of a fraction of a millimetre shows as a dark line against Boxwood, and it cannot be corrected afterwards.

Jaya adds a second problem on top of that. The stripes are horizontal, but the shape narrows to a point at the bottom — so as the form tapers, the two bands sit at different widths, and they have to be placed so the spacing still reads as deliberate once the diamond closes to a tip. Then the faces are hollowed, which cuts across the bands at a changing depth. A stripe that wandered by a hair at the joining stage becomes obvious the moment the surface curves.

The tips are the last risk. Ebony is dense but brittle at a fine point, and there is no recovering a chipped tip — the piece is scrapped.

A stud that still reads as a statement

Most statement earrings solve the problem by hanging lower. Jaya doesn't. At 4 cm across it sits flat against the lobe and gets its presence from width and contrast instead.

That makes it a rare thing: an earring with real visual weight that stays put. Nothing swings into your neck, nothing catches on a dupatta, and there is no drop to worry about when you tip your head. For anyone who finds danglers impractical but finds plain studs too quiet, this is the middle answer.

How big are they?
4 cm across the diamond, point to point. That is statement width for a stud — wider than most — which is exactly the intention.

Are the pale stripes painted on?
No. Each of the two stripes is a separate strip of Boxwood joined edge to edge with the Ebony, and the block is shaped afterwards. The colour runs all the way through the wood rather than sitting on the surface.

What woods are used?
Two. Ebony for the body, Boxwood for the two stripes.

Is the gold colour real gold, or metal?
Neither. It is Boxwood, which is naturally a pale honey gold and warms further as it is cut and polished. In daylight the polished surface throws back a good deal of light and can read almost metallic, but there is no plating or leaf on this pair.

How do they fasten?
Push-back studs on metal alloy posts. They sit flat against the lobe with no drop and no movement.

How much do they weigh?

What is the difference between joining and inlay?
Joining bonds separate pieces of wood edge to edge and shapes the result as one object. Inlay cuts a channel into a solid piece and sets another wood inside it. Jaya is joined, which is why the stripes are broad bands rather than fine lines.

Will the stripes wear off or fade?
No. There is no surface layer to wear away and no dye to fade. Both woods deepen slightly with age, which tends to sharpen the contrast rather than soften it. Keep them out of direct sunlight.

Could the bands come apart?
Not in normal wear. The joints are bonded and the block is shaped as one piece afterwards. What does stress a join is prolonged moisture, so take them off before showering or swimming.

Are the points sharp against the skin?
The tips are shaped and polished, not left as edges. They are fine against the cheek and the neck. They are, however, the part most likely to chip if the earring is dropped onto a hard floor.

Are wooden earrings strong enough for regular wear?
Ebony and Boxwood are both dense hardwoods, and each pair is hand-finished and quality-checked before it leaves us. Jaya handles daily wear. What it does not handle is being dropped onto tile or stone.

What if they get wet?
Dry them straight away with a soft cloth and leave them in open air before storing. Brief contact is survivable; soaking, swimming and showering are not.

What are the posts made of?
Metal alloy. The wooden face — the part against your ear — is bare Ebony and Boxwood with no plating or coating. If your ears react easily to metal, please write to us before ordering.

Do these work with a saree?
Very well, particularly with handloom and cotton, and particularly with a high-neck or collared blouse where a necklace isn't an option.

Will my pair look exactly like the photographs?
The design will match. The exact stripe placement and the grain in each piece will not, because every strip is cut and fitted by hand and no two pieces of Boxwood carry the same figure.
