Varga is the Sanskrit word for a square. There is no second wood here, no inlay, no banding and no painted colour — just a single dark square and the cut that frames it.

Everything rests on the bevel

The face of Varga is flat. Around it, the edge is cut away at an angle, so a narrow border runs the whole way round the square and the centre sits back from it. That bevel is the entire design, and it is doing more work than it appears to.

A flat square of dark wood, left plain, reads as a piece of material. Cut a bevel around it and it becomes an object — because the angled border catches light at a different angle to the face, so the square gains an outline of its own without a single line being drawn on it. Turn your head and the border brightens while the centre stays dark.

Ebony is the wood that makes this legible. It is dense enough that the grain all but disappears, so nothing distracts from the geometry, and it takes a polish deep enough for the bevel to hold a clean highlight. On a figured wood the same cut would be lost in the pattern.

The colour is Ebony's own — nothing here is dyed, stained, painted or lacquered.

The everyday piece in the range

Most of what we make is designed to be looked at. Varga is designed to be worn without thinking about it — small, dark, geometric, and short enough not to catch on a collar or a scarf. It is the pair you can put on at seven in the morning and forget until you take it off.

It is also the one design here that leaves room for other jewellery. A statement drop asks you to keep the rest quiet; a small square does not.

How to style Varga Wooden Earrings

At the office. Dark, compact and unfussy against white, grey, navy, black and olive. It reads as considered rather than decorative, which is the useful register for work.

With a saree. Short enough to wear with the hair down, and dark enough to hold its own against a bright drape. Particularly good with cream, off-white, mustard and anything with a black border.

Are wooden earrings durable enough for daily wear?

Ebony is among the hardest woods worked anywhere. Handled with ordinary care — not dropped onto tile, not left sitting in water — Varga is built for years of regular wear.

What if they get wet?

Take them off before showering, swimming or working out, and keep them away from sustained damp. If a splash lands on them, dry it with a soft cloth and leave the pair in open air for a while before storing.

Will the colour change over time?

Very little. Ebony is already at the dark end of what wood does, so it holds its depth far better than a pale wood holds its paleness. Keeping the pair out of direct sunlight preserves the polish.

How should I clean and store them?

A soft, dry cloth after each wear — no water, no soap, no alcohol-based cleaner. A polished dark surface marks more readily than a matte one, so a wipe after wearing matters here.

Will my pair look exactly like the photographs?

Very close. Ebony is the wood where variation shows least, because the grain is so dark it barely reads — but each square is still cut, bevelled and polished by hand from repurposed offcuts, so small differences remain.
