Vedika is the Sanskrit word for a railing — the row of upright posts that encloses a shrine or a courtyard. The form follows it exactly: parallel bands standing side by side, each one its own colour, held together as a single piece.

Joined, not printed

Every band is a separate strip of wood. Boxwood, Ebony and Padauk are cut, laid edge to edge, bonded, and the whole block is shaped afterwards — so the colour runs all the way through the bar rather than sitting on its surface. Break one and the stripes would still be there.

What makes this design demanding is how little there is to hide behind. Vedika is narrow, flat and completely plain: no inlay, no carving, no painted detail, nothing to draw the eye away. The joins are the piece. On a wider design a seam can sit quietly among other things happening; here every one of them runs the full length of the bar in plain sight, and any gap or step between two woods would be the first thing you noticed.

Three woods also means three different densities meeting. Ebony, Boxwood and Padauk each cut and sand at their own rate, so bringing all three to one level surface takes more care than joining two.

Three woods, three colours, nothing added

Ebony grows near-black. Boxwood grows pale gold. Padauk grows a strong coral red. Nothing on Vedika is dyed, stained or painted — the whole palette is simply three species sitting next to one another.

One honest note about the red: Padauk deepens with time and light, moving from bright coral towards a richer brick tone over months and years. That is the wood maturing rather than fading, and most people come to prefer the settled colour. Keeping the pair out of direct sunlight slows it.

A sleek shape in a range of bold ones

Most of what we make is broad — discs, shields, leaves, chandeliers. Vedika is the opposite: narrow enough to sit close to the jaw without widening the face, and short enough at 4 cm to stay out of the way of a collar or a scarf.

That makes it one of the easier pieces here to wear on an ordinary day, while still carrying three colours. It is a lot of interest in very little space.

How to style Vedika Wooden Earrings

With a saree. Black, gold and red together is the oldest warm palette in Indian dress, so Vedika sits naturally with cotton, khadi, linen, tussar and handloom drapes — mustard, rust, cream, olive, maroon and black especially. The slim shape reads clearly with the hair up or down.

With a kurta. Solid fabric lets the three bands stay legible. Ivory, ochre, terracotta, indigo and black all pick up one of the woods.

At the office. Narrow, short and unfussy. Nothing swings past the jaw, which makes this a practical choice for a working day.

With western wear. Linen, denim, a white shirt, earth-toned co-ord sets. The bar shape is clean enough to read as contemporary even though the palette is traditional.

Is the red colour natural?

Yes. It is Padauk, which grows a strong orange-red without any treatment. The gold is Boxwood and the black is Ebony.

Will the red fade?

It deepens rather than fades, moving from bright coral towards brick red over months and years in light and air. All Padauk does this. Storing the pair away from direct sunlight slows it.

Will the joins come apart?

Not with ordinary wear. A properly prepared joint in dense hardwood is as strong as the wood on either side of it. What stresses any join over time is moisture, which is the main reason to keep wooden jewellery dry.

How long are these earrings?

The bar is approximately 4 cm. Nothing hangs past the jawline, which is what makes this one of the more practical designs in the range for everyday wear.

How much do they weigh?

10 g for the pair — a fraction of what a metal bar of the same size would weigh, so there is very little pull on the lobe.

What are the hooks made of?

Are wooden earrings durable enough for regular wear?

Ebony, Boxwood and Padauk are all dense, close-grained hardwoods chosen for strength. Handled with ordinary care — not dropped onto tile, not left sitting in water — Vedika is built for years of wear rather than a season.

What if they get wet?

Take them off before showering, swimming or working out, and keep them away from sustained damp. If a splash lands on them, dry it with a soft cloth and leave the pair in open air for a while before storing.

Will my pair look exactly like the photographs?

The design will match, but the band widths, the grain and the exact depth of the Padauk will differ, because three natural woods vary independently of one another. Two pairs are never quite the same.
