Rukmani puts the quietest wood we use directly above the loudest, and lets the join between them do the work.

At the lobe sits a square of black Ebony, turned to stand on its point. It carries no pattern at all — no inlay, no engraving, no paint. It is one piece of dense black wood, shaped and polished until the surface reads almost like stone.

Below it, on a metal ring, hangs a drop banded in Padauk and Boxwood. Broad strips of deep red Padauk and pale gold Boxwood are joined edge to edge into a solid block, and only then is the block shaped — wide across the top, sides drawing inward and down, finishing on a narrower base. The bands are not painted onto the surface. They run all the way through the wood. The drop measures about 3.5 cm.

Why joining is harder than it looks

Joining bonds separate strips of wood into a single block, which is then shaped as one object. The difficulty is entirely in the preparation. Every mating face has to be worked dead flat and dead square, because a join is only as invisible as the surfaces going into it. A gap of a fraction of a millimetre shows as a pale line against Ebony or a dark line against Boxwood, and there is no way to fix it afterwards.

Rukmani makes this harder in two ways. It uses three woods rather than two, so there are more joins and more chances to be out. And the shaping happens after the joining — the sides draw inward as they descend, which means each band ends up a different width. Any drift in the original joins shows most exactly where the shape narrows and the wood is least forgiving.

Three woods, three natural colours

Nothing on Rukmani is coloured artificially. Ebony is naturally near-black. Padauk — also called African Coral Wood — is a deep orange-red in the log, and it deepens further as it is cut and polished. Boxwood is pale gold, and it warms the same way. Put side by side, they give you a full palette without a drop of stain, which is the whole argument for working in exotic hardwood rather than painting a pale wood to imitate one.

How to style Rukmani

• Sarees: outstanding with black, rust, mustard, maroon and deep green — handloom, tussar, silk and Kanjivaram all carry it
• Festive and wedding wear: Durga Puja, Navratri, Diwali, sangeet, mehendi and reception dressing, where the red reads warm under evening light

One caution: avoid a horizontally striped or heavily printed outfit. The bands are the whole point, and a competing stripe at close range flattens both.

Are the coloured bands painted?
No. Each band is a separate strip of wood — red Padauk, pale Boxwood — joined edge to edge and then shaped. The colour runs all the way through the piece rather than sitting on the surface.

What woods are used?

Is the red wood dyed?
No. Padauk is naturally a deep orange-red and deepens further as it is cut and polished. Nothing on this pair is dyed or stained.

What is the difference between joining and inlay?
Joining bonds separate pieces of wood edge to edge and shapes the result as one object. Inlay cuts a channel into a solid piece and sets another wood inside it. Rukmani is joined, which is why the bands are broad rather than fine lines.

How big are they?
The banded drop is roughly 3.5 cm, with the Ebony square sitting above it at the lobe.

How much do they weigh?
10 g the pair. A metal earring of the same size would weigh several times that, which is why wood suits designs with real presence — the size is visual rather than physical.

Will the bands wear off or fade?
No. There is no surface layer to wear away and no dye to fade. All three woods deepen slightly with age, which tends to sharpen the contrast rather than soften it. Keep them out of direct sunlight.

Could the joined bands come apart?
Not in normal wear. The joints are bonded and the block is shaped as one piece afterwards. What does stress a join is prolonged moisture, so take them off before showering or swimming.

Why is the Ebony square left completely plain?
Because the drop below is already doing a great deal. A pattern on the square would compete with the bands and both would lose. The plain black also gives the eye somewhere to rest before it reaches the colour.

Are wooden earrings strong enough for daily use?
Ebony, Padauk and Boxwood are all dense hardwoods, and each pair is hand-finished and quality-checked before it leaves us. Rukmani handles regular wear. What it does not handle is being dropped onto tile or stone.

What if they get wet?
Dry them straight away with a soft cloth and leave them in open air before storing. Brief contact is survivable; soaking, swimming and showering are not.

What are the hooks made of?
Metal alloy, with a metal ring joining the two elements. The wooden body — the part against your ear — is bare hardwood with no plating or coating. If your ears react easily to metal, please write to us before ordering.

Do these work with sarees?
Very well, provided the drape is not itself striped or busily printed. Black, rust, mustard, maroon and deep green are the natural matches, and handloom or tussar suits the wood particularly well.

Will my pair look exactly like the photographs?
The design will match. The exact band widths and the grain in each wood will not, because every strip is cut and fitted by hand and no two pieces of Padauk carry the same figure.
