A pointed oval of pale Boxwood, with a single line of Ebony inlaid down its centre from tip to tip.

Shashi is a Sanskrit name for the moon. The shape is what you get when two crescents meet back to back — wide at the middle, closing to a point at either end — and the dark line runs exactly where they would join.

It is the quietest piece we make. One shape, one line, no second element, nothing hanging below it. The whole design rests on the two things being right: the curve symmetrical on both sides, and the line dead centre.

▾Details
  • Shape: a pointed oval leaf, widest at the centre, tapering to a point at each end
  • Body: Boxwood, pale gold and close-grained
  • Centre line: a fine strip of Ebony inlaid into a channel cut down the length, sanded and polished flush
  • Colour: natural wood colour, undyed and unpainted
  • Findings: metal alloy hooks
  • Weight: 10 g per pair
  • Sold as: one pair
  • Made in: India, from responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods, handcrafted by skilled artisans

One line, and nowhere to hide

The Ebony is inlaid, not drawn. A channel is cut down the face of the Boxwood, a strip of Ebony is seated into it, and both are sanded and polished back until they finish level. Run a finger along it and you feel one continuous surface — the line is in the wood, not on it.

A single line down a symmetrical shape is the hardest place to put one. On a patterned piece the eye takes in the whole arrangement and a fraction of drift goes unnoticed. Here there is one line and two curved edges, and the line is read against both of them for its entire length. If it sits a hair off centre at the midpoint, it shows; if it wanders, it shows more.

The shape has to hold up to the same scrutiny. Both halves of a pointed oval are mirror images, and the eye checks one against the other without being asked. There is no pattern to carry a shape that is slightly out.

Why Boxwood for a plain piece

Boxwood is the classical engraving timber — dense, close-grained and almost without visible figure. On a decorated piece that evenness is a background. On a plain one it is the entire surface, which is why a design with nothing on it needs the better wood rather than a lesser one. The pale gold tone is the wood's own, deepened by cutting and polishing; nothing here is dyed or stained, and the Ebony is naturally that black.

How to style Shashi

  • Sarees: the easiest piece in the range to wear with a worked or patterned drape, because it brings no pattern of its own — good with Kanjivaram, Banarasi, printed cottons and anything with a busy border
  • Work and everyday: at 10 g with no moving parts, this is a piece you forget you are wearing; it suits shirts, tailored linen and a plain neckline
  • Ethnic wear: a kurta or anarkali where the outfit is doing the talking
  • Western wear: linen, white, cream, denim, earth tones
  • Festive occasions: works, though it reads as understated rather than celebratory — wear it when the saree is the statement

This is the piece to reach for when everything else you are wearing is already loud. Both gold and silver sit comfortably against pale Boxwood.

▾Care
  • Put your earrings on after perfume, makeup and skincare have settled
  • Remove them before bathing, swimming or exercising — moisture is what stresses an inlay channel over time
  • Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after each wear
  • Store in the box or pouch provided, away from moisture, heat and direct sunlight
  • Handle by the metal findings rather than the wooden body

Frequently asked questions

▾Is the dark line painted, engraved or inlaid?

Inlaid. A channel is cut down the face of the Boxwood, a fine strip of Ebony is seated into it, and both are sanded and polished flush. The surface is smooth right across — the line is in the wood rather than on it.

▾What does Shashi mean?

It is a Sanskrit name for the moon. The pointed oval is the shape two crescents make when they meet back to back, and the inlaid line runs where that join would fall.

▾Which woods are used?

Two. The leaf is Boxwood, pale gold and close-grained. The line down its centre is Ebony, a dense near-black hardwood. Both are responsibly repurposed exotic wood.

▾Why is a plain design harder to get right than a patterned one?

Because there is nothing to distract the eye. A pattern absorbs small irregularities; a single line down a symmetrical shape is read against both curved edges for its whole length, and both halves of the shape are read against each other. Any drift in either shows immediately.

▾Is the pale colour natural or is the wood bleached?

Natural. Boxwood is pale gold in the log and deepens slightly as it is cut and polished. Nothing on this pair is dyed, stained, bleached or painted, and Ebony is that black on its own.

▾How much do they weigh?

10 g the pair. A piece of this size in metal would weigh several times that, which is why wood suits designs meant to be worn all day.

▾Will the inlaid line wear off?

No. The Ebony runs into the wood rather than sitting on it, so there is no surface layer to rub away. Keeping the pair dry is what protects the inlay over the long term.

▾Are these suitable for everyday wear?

They are the most wearable piece in the range. One solid element, no moving parts, 10 g the pair and no pattern to clash with anything — this is the pair that goes with whatever you already own.

▾Do they work with patterned sarees?

Better than anything else we make. A piece with its own pattern competes with a worked border or a printed drape; this one brings a shape and a single line, so it sits alongside Kanjivaram, Banarasi and printed cottons without arguing with them.

▾Are wooden earrings durable enough for regular wear?

Boxwood and Ebony are both dense, close-grained hardwoods chosen for strength. Handled with ordinary care, Shashi is built for years of wear. What it does not handle is being dropped onto tile or stone.

▾What if they get wet?

Dry them straight away with a soft cloth and leave them in open air before storing. Brief contact is survivable; soaking, swimming and showering are not.

▾Will the colour fade?

Neither wood is dyed, so there is no colour to fade or bleed. Boxwood warms towards a deeper honey with age and light while Ebony holds its depth, so the contrast softens slightly over the years. Keep the pair out of direct sunlight to slow it.

▾What are the hooks made of?

Metal alloy. The wooden body — the part against your ear — is bare Boxwood and Ebony with no plating or coating. If your ears react easily to metal, please write to us before ordering and we will tell you exactly what we know rather than guess.

▾Will my pair look exactly like the photographs?

The design will match. The grain in each leaf and the exact width of the inlaid line will not, because the wood differs pair to pair and every channel is cut and fitted by hand.
