Five Boxwood leaves, each with a single line of Ebony inlaid down its centre — four falling and one lying across the collarbone.
Jyotsna is the Sanskrit word for moonlight, where Shashi is the moon itself. The distinction is the design. Shashi concentrates the leaf into a single point at the throat; Jyotsna spreads it — the same shape repeated down both sides of the neckline, light rather than source.
The leaf is a pointed oval: wide at the middle, closing to a point at either end. It is what you get when two crescents meet back to back, and the inlaid line runs exactly where that join would fall.
The line turns at the centre
This is the thing to look at, and it is the reason the necklace reads the way it does.
Four of the five leaves hang vertically, so the Ebony line runs down them — the eye reads each one as falling. The fifth, at the centre front, is larger and lies horizontally. The same leaf, the same single line, rotated a quarter turn.
That rotation changes what the shape means. A vertical leaf is a drop; a horizontal one is a bar. So the line descends down both sides of the neckline, reaches the centre, and turns to run across the body instead — one continuous idea that changes direction exactly where the necklace does. Nothing is added to mark the centre. The centre is marked by the line turning.
One line, and nowhere to hide
The Ebony is inlaid, not drawn. A channel is cut down the face of each Boxwood leaf, a fine strip of Ebony is seated into it, and both are sanded and polished back until they finish level. Run a finger along it and you feel one continuous surface — the line is in the wood, not on it.
A single line down a symmetrical shape is the hardest place to put one. There is one line and two curved edges, and the line is read against both of them for its entire length. On a set of seven leaves — five on the necklace and one at each ear — they also have to agree with each other, at two different sizes, with no pattern anywhere to carry a shape that is slightly out.
How the necklace is built
Five leaves linked with metal rings. Two descend on each side from the cord, hanging point-down. The fifth is broader than the rest and sits across the centre front, joining the two lower leaves where they meet.
The cord is cotton thread, not leather, and it adjusts: a cotton bead slides along the thread passing through it, so you set the length yourself and it stays where you put it.
The earrings
A single leaf on a hook — the same design we sell on its own as Shashi Wooden Earrings, and the same pair used in the Shashi set. One leaf at each ear is the right weight against five across the collarbone; a second element would make the whole thing crowded.

Why Boxwood for a plain piece
Boxwood is the classical engraving timber — dense, close-grained and almost without visible figure. On a decorated piece that evenness is a background. On a plain one it is the entire surface, which is why a design with nothing on it needs the better wood rather than a lesser one. The pale gold tone is the wood's own, deepened by cutting and polishing; nothing in this set is dyed or stained, and the Ebony is naturally that black.
How to style the Jyotsna set
- Sarees: the easiest set in the range to wear with a worked or patterned drape, because it brings no pattern of its own — good with Kanjivaram, Banarasi, printed cottons and anything with a busy border
- Necklines: the horizontal centre leaf wants a little width to sit against, so an open or boat neckline suits it better than a high closed one
- Work and everyday: wear the earrings alone on ordinary days; nothing in the set depends on the rest of it
- Ethnic wear: a kurta or anarkali where the outfit is doing the talking
- Festive occasions: understated rather than celebratory — this is the set for when the saree is the statement
Keep the blouse plain. A worked neckline competes directly with five leaves laid across it. Adjust the cord shorter so the centre leaf sits flat rather than tipping forward.
▾Care
- Put the set on after perfume, makeup and skincare have settled — the necklace sits where perfume is usually heaviest
- Take it off before bathing, swimming or exercising. Moisture is what stresses an inlay channel over time, and cotton thread holds damp longer than wood does
- Wipe the wood gently with a soft, dry cloth after each wear
- Store flat in the box or pouch provided, away from moisture, heat and direct sunlight — laying it flat keeps the linked leaves from twisting
- Handle the earrings by the metal findings and the necklace by the cord rather than the wooden leaves

Frequently asked questions
▾What is included in the Jyotsna set?
One pair of earrings and one necklace. The necklace carries five Boxwood leaves; the earrings are one leaf each. Every leaf has a single Ebony line inlaid down its centre.
▾What does Jyotsna mean?
Moonlight, in Sanskrit. Shashi, our name for the same leaf, means the moon. This set spreads the shape across the collarbone rather than concentrating it at the throat — light rather than source.
▾How is Jyotsna different from the Shashi set?
Same leaf, same woods, same earrings — a different necklace. The Shashi set uses three leaves: two angled at the throat with one hanging below them. Jyotsna uses five, descending down both sides with a larger one lying horizontally across the centre. Shashi sits closer to the neck; Jyotsna spreads wider and lower.
▾Why is the centre leaf lying sideways?
Because a leaf turned a quarter turn stops being a drop and becomes a bar. The four side leaves hang, so their inlaid lines run downward; the centre one lies across the body, so its line runs across. The line changes direction exactly where the necklace does, which is what marks the centre — nothing is added to do it.
▾How many leaves are in the necklace?
Five, linked with metal rings — two falling on each side and a larger one lying horizontally at the centre front.
▾Is the centre leaf bigger than the others?
Yes. It is broader than the four that hang, which is what lets it hold the centre without a second element beside it.
▾Are the earrings the same as the Shashi earrings sold on their own?
Yes. The earrings in this set are the same design we sell separately as Shashi Wooden Earrings, and the same pair used in the Shashi set.
▾Do the earrings have hooks or push backs?
Hooks. The leaf hangs from a metal alloy hook, which lets it swing and sit a little lower than a post would.
▾Is the dark line painted, engraved or inlaid?
Inlaid. A channel is cut down the face of each Boxwood leaf, a fine strip of Ebony is seated into it, and both are sanded and polished flush. Every surface is smooth right across.
▾Which woods are used?
Two. The leaves are Boxwood, pale gold and close-grained. The line down each one is Ebony, a dense near-black hardwood. Both are responsibly repurposed exotic wood.
▾Why is a plain design harder to get right than a patterned one?
Because there is nothing to distract the eye. A single line down a symmetrical shape is read against both curved edges for its whole length, and both halves of the shape are read against each other. Across seven leaves at two different sizes they must also agree with one another.
▾Is the pale colour natural or is the wood bleached?
Natural. Boxwood is pale gold in the log and deepens slightly as it is cut and polished. Nothing in this set is dyed, stained, bleached or painted, and Ebony is that black on its own.
▾Is the necklace adjustable?
Yes. A cotton bead slides along the cord that passes through it, so you set the length yourself and it holds. Worth using here — the centre leaf needs to sit flat rather than tip forward.
▾What is the cord made of — is it leather?
Cotton thread, not leather. The adjuster is a cotton bead as well.
▾Is a necklace of five wooden leaves heavy?
No. The same necklace in metal or stone would be a considerable weight at the neck; in Boxwood the scale is visual rather than physical. The earrings are 10 g the pair.
▾Will the inlaid lines wear off?
No. The Ebony runs into the wood rather than sitting on it, so there is no surface layer to rub away. Keeping the set dry is what protects the inlay over the long term.
▾What if it gets wet?
Dry it straight away with a soft cloth and leave it in open air before storing — the cotton cord takes longer to dry than the wood does. Brief contact is survivable; soaking, swimming and showering are not.
▾What are the findings made of?
Metal alloy — hooks on the earrings and rings linking the leaves of the necklace. The wood itself is bare Boxwood and Ebony with no plating or coating. If your skin reacts easily to metal, please write to us before ordering and we will tell you exactly what we know rather than guess.
▾Does the set work with patterned sarees?
Better than anything else we make. A set with its own pattern competes with a worked border or a printed drape; this one brings a shape and a single line, so it sits alongside Kanjivaram, Banarasi and printed cottons without arguing with them. Keep the blouse plain.
▾Will my set look exactly like the photographs?
The design will match. The grain in each leaf and the exact width of every inlaid line will not, because the wood differs piece to piece and every channel is cut and fitted by hand.
