Joining starts with separate pieces and bonds them into one. Every mating face has to be worked dead flat and dead square, because a joint is only as invisible as the surfaces going into it. On a grid of small cubes the difficulty multiplies: each cube meets four neighbours, and a single face that is a fraction out of square pushes the whole grid off line. There is no way to correct it later — the panel is either true or it is scrapped.

Inlay starts with one solid piece and cuts into it. The channel has to match the width of the Ebony strip exactly, or a pale seam shows alongside the black. On a teardrop the channels also have to stay parallel while the shape itself narrows, which means each line runs a slightly different length and none of them can wander.

Most pieces use one method. Kavya uses both, which is why it carries more bench time than a single-technique design of the same size.

Boxwood is naturally pale gold, and it deepens as it is cut, worked and polished. Nothing on Kavya is dyed or stained. The tone you see is the wood itself, which is also why it will go on deepening slowly with age rather than wearing off.

Is the grid at the top carved or built?
Built. Those are separate cubes of Boxwood joined edge to edge. The lines you see are the seams between real pieces, not grooves cut into a single block.

What are the dark lines on the drop?
Ebony, inlaid. Fine strips of Ebony are set into channels cut down the face of the Boxwood teardrop and polished flush, so the surface is smooth to the touch.

What is the difference between joining and inlay?
Joining bonds separate pieces into one object. Inlay cuts into a solid piece and sets another wood inside it. Both are skilled, and they fail in different places — a join at the seam, an inlay at the channel walls.

Is the honey colour natural or is the wood stained?
Natural. Boxwood is pale gold in the log and deepens as it is cut and polished. Nothing on this pair is dyed, stained or painted.

How long is the drop?
Roughly 4 cm for the teardrop, with the joined panel sitting above it at the lobe.

How much do they weigh?
10 g the pair. A metal earring of the same size would weigh several times that, which is why wood suits designs with real presence — the size is visual rather than physical.

Will the inlay lines wear off?
No. The Ebony runs into the wood rather than sitting on it, so there is no surface layer to rub away. Keeping the pair dry is what protects both the inlay and the joins over the long term.

Could the joined cubes come apart?
Not in normal wear. The joints are bonded and the panel is worked as one piece afterwards. What does stress a joint is prolonged moisture, so take them off before showering or swimming.

Are wooden earrings strong enough for daily use?
Boxwood and Ebony are both dense hardwoods, and each pair is hand-finished and quality-checked before it leaves us. Kavya handles daily wear. What it does not handle is being dropped onto tile or stone.

What if they get wet?
Dry them straight away with a soft cloth and leave them in open air before storing. Brief contact is survivable; soaking, swimming and showering are not.

Will the colour fade?
Neither wood is dyed, so there is no colour to fade or bleed. Both tones deepen slightly with age, which tends to sharpen the contrast rather than soften it. Keep them out of direct sunlight.

What are the hooks made of?
Metal alloy, with a metal ring joining the two elements. The wooden body — the part against your ear — is bare Boxwood and Ebony with no plating or coating. If your ears react easily to metal, please write to us before ordering.

Do these work with sarees?
Very well, as long as the drape is not itself checked or finely striped. Handloom, tussar, cotton and linen in warm or earthy shades are the natural match.

Will my pair look exactly like the photographs?
The design will match. The exact grain, the figure in each cube and the spacing of the inlay lines will not, because the wood differs pair to pair and every line is cut and fitted by hand.
