✋ Every piece is handcrafted, so we can't accept returns for a change of mind.
Kavya began as a pair of earrings. This is the same design carried onto a pendant, so the grid and the inlay repeat at the ear and at the throat.
Both pieces are built the same way, and the way is worth knowing, because the top and the bottom of each one are made by opposite methods.
At the top sits a small square panel built from individual cubes of Boxwood, joined edge to edge into a grid. Each cube is cut square, faced flat, and bonded to its neighbours, so the pattern you see is not carved into the surface — it is the seams between real pieces of wood.
Below it, on a metal ring, hangs a teardrop of the same Boxwood, this time inlaid. Fine lines of Ebony are set into channels cut down the length of the drop, then levelled and polished until the face is completely smooth. Both teardrops measure about 4 cm — the pendant is the earring drop at the same scale, not a larger version of it.
Built above, cut below, three times over.
▾Details
- Sold as: one pair of earrings and one pendant necklace
- Upper element, all three pieces: small Boxwood cubes joined into a square panel
- Lower element, all three pieces: Boxwood teardrop inlaid with fine Ebony lines, roughly 4 cm
- Colour: the warm honey tone is Boxwood's own colour, deepened by cutting and polishing — no dye, stain or paint anywhere in this set
- Findings: metal alloy, with a metal ring joining the two elements on each piece
- Necklace cord: fixed length, not adjustable
- Earrings: 10 g the pair
- Made in: India, from responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods, handcrafted by skilled artisans
Two techniques, three pieces
Joining starts with separate pieces and bonds them into one. Every mating face has to be worked dead flat and dead square, because a joint is only as invisible as the surfaces going into it. On a grid of small cubes the difficulty multiplies: each cube meets four neighbours, and a single face that is a fraction out of square pushes the whole grid off line. There is no way to correct it later — the panel is either true or it is scrapped.
Inlay starts with one solid piece and cuts into it. The channel has to match the width of the Ebony strip exactly, or a pale seam shows alongside the black. On a teardrop the channels also have to stay parallel while the shape itself narrows, which means each line runs a slightly different length and none of them can wander.
Most pieces use one method. Kavya uses both, and a set means building it three times over — two earrings and a pendant that have to match each other closely enough to read as one design when worn together.
Boxwood is naturally pale gold, and it deepens as it is cut, worked and polished. Nothing in this set is dyed or stained. The tone you see is the wood itself, which is also why it will go on deepening slowly with age rather than wearing off.
How to style the Kavya set
- Sarees: excellent with handloom, cotton, tussar and linen drapes in cream, mustard, rust, olive and indigo — a set reads best with an uncluttered neckline, so a plain blouse rather than a worked one
- Festive and celebration wear: Durga Puja, Navratri, Diwali, mehendi and daytime functions, where warm wood reads better than metal in sunlight
- Kurtas and indo-western sets: solid colours let the grid and the inlay lines register
- Office and everyday: wear the earrings alone on working days and add the pendant for occasions — the set is designed to separate
- Western wear: linen, white and cream, denim, earth tones, and anything with an open or V neckline
One caution: keep the outfit plain. A checked or finely striped fabric fights directly with the cube grid, and with three pieces of it on at once the clash is louder than with earrings alone.
▾Care
- Put the set on after perfume, makeup and skincare have settled — the pendant sits against skin at the throat, where perfume is usually heaviest
- Take it off before bathing, swimming or exercising — moisture is what stresses a joint and an inlay channel over time
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after each wear; a soft dry brush clears dust from the grid seams if it settles
- Store in the box or pouch provided, away from moisture, direct sunlight and heat
- Lift and remove each piece by the metal findings or the cord, not by the wooden body

Frequently asked questions
▾What is included in the Kavya set?
One pair of earrings and one pendant necklace, in the same design. All three pieces pair a joined Boxwood cube panel with an Ebony inlaid teardrop.
▾Are the earrings the same as the Kavya earrings sold on their own?
Yes. The earrings in this set are the same design we sell separately as Kavya Wooden Earrings. If you already own the earrings and only want the pendant, write to us and we will tell you what is available.
▾Is the pendant bigger than the earring drop?
No — both teardrops are roughly 4 cm. The pendant is the same element at the same scale, which is what makes the set read as one design rather than a large piece with two small echoes.
▾Is the necklace cord adjustable?
No. The cord is a fixed length and cannot be shortened or lengthened. If the exact drop matters to you, please write to us before ordering and we will confirm the measurement.
▾Is the grid at the top carved or built?
Built. Those are separate cubes of Boxwood joined edge to edge. The lines you see are the seams between real pieces, not grooves cut into a single block.
▾What are the dark lines on the teardrops?
Ebony, inlaid. Fine strips of Ebony are set into channels cut down the face of each Boxwood teardrop and polished flush, so the surface is smooth to the touch. The pendant is made exactly the same way as the earrings.
▾What is the difference between joining and inlay?
Joining bonds separate pieces into one object. Inlay cuts into a solid piece and sets another wood inside it. Both are skilled, and they fail in different places — a join at the seam, an inlay at the channel walls.
▾Is the honey colour natural or is the wood stained?
Natural. Boxwood is pale gold in the log and deepens as it is cut and polished. Nothing in this set is dyed, stained or painted.
▾How heavy is the set?
The earrings are 10 g the pair. Wood is what makes a design this size wearable — a metal earring of the same dimensions would weigh several times that, so the presence is visual rather than physical.
▾Will the inlay lines wear off?
No. The Ebony runs into the wood rather than sitting on it, so there is no surface layer to rub away. Keeping the set dry is what protects both the inlay and the joins over the long term.
▾Could the joined cubes come apart?
Not in normal wear. The joints are bonded and each panel is worked as one piece afterwards. What does stress a joint is prolonged moisture, so take the set off before showering or swimming.
▾What if it gets wet?
Dry it straight away with a soft cloth and leave it in open air before storing. Brief contact is survivable; soaking, swimming and showering are not.
▾Will the colour fade?
Neither wood is dyed, so there is no colour to fade or bleed. Both tones deepen slightly with age, which tends to sharpen the contrast rather than soften it. Keep the set out of direct sunlight.
▾What are the findings made of?
Metal alloy, with a metal ring joining the two elements on each piece. The wooden bodies — the parts against your skin — are bare Boxwood and Ebony with no plating or coating. If your skin reacts easily to metal, please write to us before ordering.
▾Does the set work with sarees?
Very well, as long as the drape is not itself checked or finely striped. Handloom, tussar, cotton and linen in warm or earthy shades are the natural match, and a plain blouse gives the pendant room to sit.
▾Can I wear the earrings without the pendant?
Yes, and we would expect you to. The earrings carry a working day on their own; the pendant is what you add for an occasion. Nothing in the set depends on the rest of it.
▾Will my set look exactly like the photographs?
The design will match. The exact grain, the figure in each cube and the spacing of the inlay lines will not, because the wood differs piece to piece and every line is cut and fitted by hand.
