✋ Every piece is handcrafted, so we can't accept returns for a change of mind.
A pointed oval cut clean through on the diagonal — one half pale Boxwood, one half black Ebony, joined and polished into a single surface.
Lavanya is the Sanskrit word for grace: not ornament, but the quality of a thing being well-proportioned. There is no carving on this piece, no inlay and no colour. It is two woods and one line.
Each drop is 4 cm, and the pair weighs 10 g.
Why the line runs diagonally
A pointed oval can be divided three ways, and only one of them works.
Cut it across the middle and the line sits on the widest axis — it simply restates the shape, and the piece reads as one object with a stripe. Cut it lengthways from point to point and the line follows the long axis, which does the same thing in the other direction.
Cut it on the diagonal and the line belongs to nothing on the piece. It touches neither point, it misses the widest axis, and it answers to no edge. That is precisely why it works: a division that does not echo the form reads as two halves set against each other rather than as a single shape with a mark on it.
It also means the two halves are not the same shape as one another. Each is a different slice of the oval, so the eye reads them as a pair of distinct pieces that happen to fit — which is the whole effect we were after.
Two woods, two densities, one surface
The halves are joined, not inlaid and not coloured. Each is cut from solid wood and the two are brought together along the diagonal, fixed, then worked back until the face is continuous.
The difficulty is that Boxwood and Ebony are not the same material. Ebony is harder and denser; Boxwood is pale, fine and comparatively soft. Sand them together and the Boxwood gives way first, so a flat worked carelessly leaves the Ebony standing very slightly proud of its neighbour. You would not see it. You would feel it, every time you picked the piece up.
Getting the join to finish level means working the two sides at different rates and judging the moment they meet — and doing it along the longest possible line, because a diagonal through a pointed oval crosses the piece at its widest. There is no short seam to hide here. Any gap or step runs the full length of the face.
What black against cream actually does
Ebony and Boxwood are the strongest natural contrast available in wood, and neither is treated to get there. The black is Ebony's own colour and the cream is Boxwood's; there is no dye, stain or paint anywhere on the piece.
At conversational distance that contrast does the work a pattern would otherwise have to do. The piece is legible from across a room without carrying any decoration, which is why it suits an outfit that already has enough going on.
It also ages well in a way a coloured finish cannot. Ebony changes least of all our woods and Boxwood warms only gently, so the contrast this design depends on will still be there in ten years.

How to style Lavanya
- Worked and printed sarees: a strong choice, because the piece carries no pattern of its own to compete with a border or a print — it brings contrast instead
- Black, white, cream and grey: the earrings are already monochrome, so a monochrome outfit reads as deliberate
- Single strong colours: indigo, rust, mustard and bottle green all give the cream half something to lift away from
- Work and everyday: among the easiest pieces we make to wear to an office — black and cream reads as considered rather than ornamental
- Western wear: a plain shirt, a black dress, structured linen
Wear your hair back if you can. A two-tone piece depends on both halves being seen, and a dark half disappearing into loose hair leaves the earring looking like half its size.
▾Care
- Put your earrings on after perfume, makeup and skincare have settled — alcohol is what troubles a polished wood surface
- Remove them before bathing, swimming or exercising. Moisture is the one thing that stresses a join over time
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after each wear — no water, no polish, no cleaning solution
- Store in the cotton pouch or box provided, away from moisture, heat and direct sunlight. Please do not store wooden jewellery in a sealed plastic or zip-lock bag — plastic traps moisture against the wood, and wood keeps best with a little air around it
- Handle by the metal findings rather than by the wooden face

Frequently asked questions
▾Are the two halves painted, or is that really two woods?
Two woods. The pale half is Boxwood and the dark half is Ebony, cut separately and joined along the diagonal. Nothing is dyed, stained or painted, and the colours go all the way through each half.
▾What size are these earrings?
Each drop measures 4 cm. That is a large earring, and it stays comfortable because the size is carried in wood rather than metal — the pair weighs 10 g.
▾Why is the join on the diagonal?
Because a diagonal is the only line that does not echo the shape. A cut across the middle restates the widest axis and a cut from point to point follows the long one; both read as a single piece with a stripe on it. A diagonal answers to no edge, so the two halves read as set against each other rather than as one shape divided.
▾Can you feel the join?
No. The face is worked back until it is continuous. That is harder than it sounds, because Ebony is denser than Boxwood and sands more slowly, so the two sides have to be worked at different rates to finish level with one another.
▾Will the join come apart?
Not in ordinary wear. Prolonged moisture is the thing that stresses any join over years, which is why we ask you to take them off before bathing or swimming and to dry them straight away if they do get damp.
▾Which woods are used?
Two. Boxwood, pale and close-grained, and Ebony, a dense near-black hardwood. Both are responsibly repurposed exotic wood.
▾Will the black fade or the cream darken?
Barely. Ebony changes least of all the woods we use and Boxwood warms only gently over years, so the contrast this design depends on stays. Nothing can fade, because no colour was added in the first place.
▾Do they have hooks or push backs?
Hooks. The drop hangs from a metal alloy hook, which lets it swing and sit a little lower than a post would.
▾Are 4 cm earrings too heavy for everyday wear?
No. Size and weight are different things. A metal earring of these dimensions would be several times heavier; at 10 g the pair, these can be worn from morning to night without pulling on the lobe.
▾What should I wear these with?
They suit a worked or printed saree particularly well, because they bring contrast rather than pattern and so do not compete with a border. Monochrome outfits read as deliberate beside them, and single strong colours like indigo, rust or mustard give the cream half something to lift away from.
▾Can I wear wooden earrings to work?
These are among the easiest we make for it. Black and cream with no decoration reads as considered rather than ornamental, and the piece sits as naturally with a plain shirt as with a kurta.
▾How should I store them?
In the cotton pouch or box provided, somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight. Please avoid sealed plastic and zip-lock bags — plastic traps moisture against the wood, and wood keeps best with a little air around it.
▾What if they get wet?
Dry them straight away with a soft cloth and leave them in open air before putting them away. Brief contact is survivable; soaking, swimming and showering are not.
▾What are the hooks made of?
Metal alloy. If your skin reacts easily to metal, please write to us before ordering and we will tell you exactly what we know rather than guess.
▾Is there a matching necklace?
Yes — the Dwaita set pairs this design with a necklace of seven of the same pieces, hung so the dark half alternates from side to side along the row.
▾Will my pair look exactly like the photographs?
The design will match. The grain in each half and the exact angle the two woods meet at will vary a little, because every piece is cut and joined by hand in a natural material.
