✋ Every piece is handcrafted, so we can't accept returns for a change of mind.
Ashtapada takes its name from the eight-by-eight chequered board on which chaturanga, the ancient Indian ancestor of chess, was played. Here the board is folded into a kite: squares of pale Boxwood and black Ebony, each cut with its own facets and joined so that every light square meets a dark one.
Because the pieces are faceted rather than flat, the chequer changes as you move. Light catches the Boxwood planes and the Ebony drops into shadow, so the pattern reads differently from the front, from the side and across a room.
It sits flat on the lobe as a stud, point down. The pair weighs 10 g.
▾Details
- Design: a kite-shaped stud built from faceted squares of Boxwood and Ebony in a chequer
- Technique: joined — separate pieces of wood bonded edge to edge
- Colour: the honey tone is Boxwood's own and the black is Ebony's own — no dye, stain or paint anywhere on this pair
- Fitting: stud post with push-back
- Findings: metal alloy
- Weight: 10 g per pair
- Sold as: one pair
- Made in: India, from responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods, handcrafted by skilled artisans
Why a joined chequer is hard
A chequer only works if every square meets its neighbours exactly. Each piece of Boxwood and Ebony has to be cut true on every face it shares, because a joint is only as invisible as the surfaces going into it. One face slightly out of line and the pattern drifts, and there is no way to correct it once the pieces are bonded.
Faceting adds a second test. After joining, the kite is cut into angled planes, and each plane crosses the seams between light and dark wood. If a joint were weak or uneven, faceting is where it would show. On a finished Ashtapada the lines run clean across every face.
Boxwood and Ebony are both dense hardwoods, which is what allows edges this crisp at this scale. The contrast is entirely the woods themselves.
How to style Ashtapada
- Sarees: handloom cotton, linen, tussar and mul in cream, mustard, rust, olive, black or ivory
- Festive wear: Diwali, weddings, mehendi and daytime functions, where warm wood reads better than metal in sunlight
- Kurtas and indo-western sets: solid colours let the chequer stand out
- Office and everyday: at 10 g, a stud you can forget you are wearing
- Western wear: a white shirt or tee, black, denim and earth tones
One caution: keep the outfit plain. A checked fabric fights directly with the chequer, and both patterns lose.
▾Care
- Put your earrings on after perfume, makeup and skincare have settled
- Take them off before bathing, swimming or exercising — moisture is what stresses a joint over time
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after each wear
- Store in the box or pouch provided, away from moisture, direct sunlight and heat
- Lift and remove by the metal post and push-back, not by the wooden body

Frequently asked questions
▾What does Ashtapada mean?
Ashtapada is the Sanskrit name for the eight-by-eight chequered board on which chaturanga, the ancient Indian ancestor of chess, was played. The earring borrows the board's alternating light and dark squares.
▾Are Ashtapada earrings solid wood or a wood-look material?
Solid wood. The pale squares are Boxwood and the black squares are Ebony, both real exotic hardwoods. There is no resin, laminate or printed wood-effect anywhere on the pair.
▾Is the chequer painted, inlaid or joined?
Joined. The Boxwood and Ebony are separate pieces bonded edge to edge, so the pattern you see is the seams between real pieces of wood, not paint on a surface or lines set into a single block.
▾Is the yellow colour natural or stained?
Natural. The warm honey tone is Boxwood's own colour, deepened by cutting and polishing, and the black is Ebony's own. Nothing on this pair is dyed, stained or painted.
▾How much do Ashtapada earrings weigh?
10 g the pair. A metal earring with the same presence would weigh several times that, which is why they sit comfortably on the lobe all day.
▾Are these studs or danglers?
Studs. Each earring sits flat on the lobe on a post with a push-back, with the point of the kite facing down.
▾What are the posts made of?
Metal alloy. The wooden body is bare Boxwood and Ebony with no plating or coating. If your ears react easily to metal, please write to us before ordering.
▾Do Ashtapada earrings suit sarees?
Yes, with plain or softly textured drapes such as handloom cotton, linen, tussar and mul in warm or earthy shades, or black and ivory. Avoid checked fabrics, which compete with the chequer.
▾Are they comfortable for office and daily wear?
Yes. At 10 g the pair and sitting close to the lobe, Ashtapada is easy to wear through a full working day, and the black-and-honey contrast works with both Indian and western office wear.
▾What if my Ashtapada earrings get wet?
Dry them straight away with a soft cloth and leave them in open air before storing. Brief contact is survivable; soaking, swimming and showering are not, because prolonged moisture is what stresses a joint over time.
▾Will my pair look exactly like the photographs?
The design will match. The exact grain and figure in each square will not, because the wood differs from pair to pair and every piece is cut and joined by hand.
▾Do you ship Ashtapada outside India?
Yes. Ashtapada ships worldwide and arrives within 5–10 days of your order. Import duties and local taxes are payable by the recipient.
▾What if my pair arrives damaged?
Message us within 48 hours of delivery with your unboxing video on WhatsApp at +91 98301 50088 or at reachchandrakalakriti@gmail.com, and we will arrange a free reverse pickup.
