A small Ebony cube at the ear, and below it a larger square worked in inlay.
Niraja is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
Both elements are square, and that is the whole composition: a small solid one above, a larger patterned one below. No curve anywhere on the piece.
The pattern is inlay, not a surface mark. Strips of wood are set into channels cut in the face, seated, then sanded and polished back until both woods finish level. Run a fingertip across the lower square and you feel one continuous surface with no ridge where one wood meets the next — the pattern goes down into the wood rather than sitting on it, which is why it cannot wear off.
Repeating the same shape at two sizes is an old trick and a reliable one: the eye reads the pair as deliberate rather than as two unrelated pieces on a hook.

Styling ▾
Strictly geometric and quite dense — these are statement wooden earrings for festive wear that still read as modern rather than ornate. Keep the cloth plain and let the inlay carry the detail.
Stacked squares fill the space between the ear and the collarbone, so skip the necklace.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the corners are the part to protect.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the pattern printed on? ▾
No. It is inlay — strips of wood set into channels cut in the surface and polished back level. The face is smooth to the touch, and because the pattern is wood rather than ink it cannot fade or wear away.
What is the difference between inlay and veneer? ▾
Inlay is cut into the wood and filled; veneer is laid on top of it. Niraja is inlaid, so the pattern sits inside the surface rather than on it.
Is the black cube real wood? ▾
Yes — Ebony, the same wood used for violin fingerboards. It is that colour naturally and is left plain and polished.
Will they be heavy on my ears? ▾
The pair weighs about 10 g. Two solid squares this size in metal would be felt on the earlobe by the end of an evening.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
