The Boxwood shield and its Ebony chevrons, worn twice — at the ear and at the throat.
Varmini takes its name from varman, the Sanskrit word for armour. The form earns it: a shield with a point at its base, crossed by chevrons that run edge to edge like plating. As a set the idea extends rather than repeats — the necklace carries the same shield, but reaches it through a run of squared Ebony tiles and a plain Ebony disc, so the armour reads as a whole rather than a single emblem.
The chevrons are inlay, not lines
Each dark chevron across the Boxwood is a strip of Ebony set into a channel cut in the pale wood, seated, then sanded and polished back until both woods finish level. Run a finger across the face and you feel one continuous surface — no ridge, no groove, no seam.
Chevrons are the hardest form of inlay we do. A straight line needs one true channel; a chevron needs two, meeting at an exact angle, and every one of them has to point the same way and sit parallel to the one above. An error of a degree at the join shows immediately, and there are several joins on every piece. A set means doing it three times, on three shields that have to match each other.
How the necklace is built
Four squares of solid Ebony sit along the cord, two to each side, cut flat and polished to the dark gloss the wood takes naturally. They meet at a plain round Ebony disc at the centre front — deliberately unworked, with no inlay and no pattern, so it reads as a pause between the squares and the shield below it.
Beneath the disc hangs the same arrangement as the earrings: an Ebony finial above a Boxwood shield with Ebony chevron inlay. The shield is the same size as the ones at your ears, which is what holds the set together — three matching faces rather than one large centrepiece echoed by two small ones.
The cord is cotton thread, not leather, and it adjusts: a cotton bead slides along the thread passing through it, so you set the length yourself and it stays where you put it.

Two woods, three faces
Above each shield sits a separate element in solid Ebony, shaped to a soft point at the crown and a downward point at its base where it meets the Boxwood. It is deliberately plain — no inlay, no pattern — so the eye reads it as a dark cap rather than as competition for the chevrons below.
The colours are the woods' own. Boxwood grows pale gold, Ebony near-black; nothing here is dyed, stained or painted. Because every piece is cut from repurposed offcuts, the Boxwood grain beneath the inlay differs from set to set, and the four Ebony squares will not be identical to each other either.
How to style the Varmini set
With a saree. Pale gold against black is the most versatile pairing in the range. Varmini works with cream, off-white, mustard, olive and rust handlooms, and holds its own against a deep red or maroon silk where a paler piece would vanish. Worn as a set, keep the blouse plain — the chevrons and the squares are doing the work.
With a kurta. Keep the fabric solid so the chevrons stay readable. Ivory, ochre, indigo, black and wine all suit it. Adjust the cord shorter for a high neckline, longer for an open one.
With western wear. A white shirt, linen, denim, monochrome. The geometry is graphic enough to read as contemporary despite the traditional palette.
For festive days and celebrations. Warm gold sits comfortably beside gold jewellery rather than competing with it, which makes this an easy choice for Durga Puja, Navratri, Diwali and daytime wedding functions.
These are broad, graphic pieces. Wear the hair up or back so the full shields are visible, and let the set be the only statement — no second necklace, no busy bangles.
▾Care
- Wipe the wood with a soft, dry cloth after every wear. Never wash it.
- Put the set on last, once perfume, makeup and skincare have settled — the necklace sits where perfume is usually heaviest.
- Take it off before bathing, swimming or exercising. Moisture is what stresses inlaid work, and cotton thread holds damp longer than wood does.
- Store in the box or pouch it arrives in, somewhere cool, dry and out of direct sunlight.
- Handle the earrings by the metal findings and the necklace by the cord rather than the wood.

Frequently asked questions
▾What is included in the Varmini set?
One pair of earrings and one necklace. All three Boxwood shields carry the same Ebony chevron inlay, each below a plain Ebony finial.
▾Are the earrings the same as the Varmini earrings sold on their own?
Yes. The earrings in this set are the same design we sell separately as Varmini Wooden Earrings.
▾How is the necklace put together?
Four squares of solid Ebony sit along the cord, two to each side. They meet a plain round Ebony disc at the centre front, and below that hangs an Ebony finial with an inlaid Boxwood shield — the same arrangement as the earrings.
▾Is the necklace adjustable?
Yes. A cotton bead slides along the cord that passes through it, so you set the length yourself and it holds. That means the set works with a high neckline or an open one without compromise.
▾What is the cord made of — is it leather?
Cotton thread, not leather. The adjuster is a cotton bead as well.
▾Is the shield on the necklace bigger than the earrings?
No — all three shields are the same size. That is what makes the set read as one design instead of a large centrepiece with two smaller echoes.
▾Which woods are used in the Varmini set?
Two. The shields are Boxwood, pale gold and close-grained. The finials, the chevrons set into the shields, the four squares and the centre disc are all Ebony, a dense near-black hardwood. Both are responsibly repurposed exotic wood.
▾Are the chevrons painted, engraved or inlaid?
Inlaid. Each one is a real strip of Ebony cut into a channel in the Boxwood, seated, then sanded and polished until both woods sit flush. The face of each shield is smooth and level right across.
▾Why is chevron inlay harder than straight-line inlay?
A straight line needs one true channel. A chevron needs two channels meeting at an exact angle, and every chevron has to point the same way and stay parallel to the one above it. A degree of error at the join is visible immediately, and on a set there are three shields that must also match each other.
▾What does the name Varmini mean?
It comes from varman, the Sanskrit word for armour. The shield form and the chevrons running across it are where the name comes from.
▾Is the black wood painted or stained?
No. Ebony is naturally near-black and needs no treatment at all. Nothing in this set is dyed, stained or painted — the contrast is simply the difference between two species of wood.
▾Will the Ebony inlay come loose or fall out?
The strips are seated into channels and finished flush, not glued onto the surface, so there is no raised edge for anything to catch. Kept dry and handled with ordinary care, the inlay stays where it is.
▾What are the findings made of?
Metal alloy, with metal rings joining the elements. The wood itself is bare Boxwood and Ebony with no plating or coating. If your skin reacts to particular metals, please write to us at reachchandrakalakriti@gmail.com before ordering and we will tell you exactly what we know rather than guess.
▾Can I wear the earrings without the necklace?
Yes. The earrings are a complete statement on their own — broad enough to carry an outfit by themselves. The necklace is what you add when you want the full armour.
▾Does the set work with sarees?
Very well. Pale gold against black suits cream, off-white, mustard, olive and rust handlooms, and holds up against deep red or maroon silk. Keep the blouse plain and the neckline uncluttered so the squares and the shield have room.
▾What if it gets wet?
Take the set off before showering, swimming or working out. Water is the one thing inlaid work genuinely dislikes, because two woods set together respond differently to moisture — and the cotton cord holds damp longer than the wood does. If it does get wet, dry it with a soft cloth and leave it in open air before storing.
▾Will the colours change over time?
Gently. Boxwood warms towards a deeper honey with age and light, while Ebony holds its depth, so the contrast softens a little over the years. That is natural ageing, not fading. Storing the set out of direct sunlight slows it.
▾Will my set look exactly like the photographs?
Very close, but the grain will be its own. Each shield is cut from repurposed offcuts and each chevron is set by hand, so the figuring in the Boxwood shifts from set to set, and the four Ebony squares will not be identical to each other either. No two sets are the same.
