🔮 Geometry with Purpose — Circles, Stars, Squares & Curves

Sanskriti is a straight line repeated. As a set it becomes a great many of them — striped bars of Ebony and Boxwood laid across the collarbone in a bib, with a matching pair at the ears.

Sanskriti means culture. A column with vertical lines running down it is one of the oldest decorative ideas there is, and it turns up in Indian architecture as readily as anywhere else. The earrings state it once. The necklace states it over and over, which is what a bib necklace is for.

Neither colour is dyed. Ebony is that black on its own, Boxwood that cream, and every stripe is simply the two woods meeting.

Joined, not printed

The stripes are not a pattern applied to a surface. Separate strips of Ebony and Boxwood are bonded edge to edge, and each bar is shaped from the block afterwards — so the black runs all the way through the wood rather than sitting on it. Cut a bar in half and the stripe would still be there.

Each mating face has to be worked dead flat and dead square before bonding, because a joint is only as invisible as the surfaces going into it. Any gap and a hairline seam appears alongside the black. On a bib necklace that discipline has to hold across every bar in the piece, and they all hang in the same plane where any one of them can be compared against its neighbours.

How the necklace is built

Striped bars are linked one to the next with metal rings and laid in rows that step outward from the centre, so the bib widens as it descends. An Ebony drop hangs at the lowest point, plain and unstriped — the one piece in the necklace that stops rather than continues the pattern.

The cord is cotton thread, not leather, and it adjusts: a cotton bead slides along the thread passing through it, so you set the length yourself and it stays where you put it. On a bib that matters more than on a pendant, because the piece has to sit at the right height to lie flat rather than ride up.

The earrings in this set

These are the Sanskriti bar on its own — a single striped bar hanging straight from the hook, without the small Boxwood round that sits above it on the earrings we sell separately. With a bib necklace carrying the pattern across the chest, the plainer earring is the better companion; the disc would be one more element competing for the same attention.

Why a straight bar is unforgiving

A teardrop or a shield has curves, and a curve absorbs small irregularities — the eye reads the sweep rather than any single point along it. A rectangle has none of that generosity. Every edge must be dead straight and every corner square, because a straight line is the one shape the human eye can check without effort.

The stripes make it stricter again. Vertical joins running the full length of a bar have to stay exactly parallel to its edges, and any drift is measured against those edges the whole way down. Multiply that across a bib and the bars must also agree with each other — a set of straight lines sitting side by side is the least forgiving arrangement in the range.

How to style the Sanskriti set

  • Sarees: excellent with handloom, khadi, linen and cotton in black, cream, indigo, rust and mustard; a bib wants a plain blouse and an uncluttered neckline
  • Work and formal wear: the most structured pieces in the range — good with shirts, tailored linen and clean necklines, though the bib reads as evening rather than desk
  • Ethnic wear: a plain kurta or an anarkali, where the bars read as a deliberate architecture rather than as decoration
  • Western wear: monochrome dressing, a black dress, a white shirt open at the collar
  • Festive occasions: works well, and the black-and-cream palette sits comfortably beside both gold and silver

Wear your hair back. A bib necklace and a vertical bar are both meant to be seen along their full length, and loose hair cuts both in half. Adjust the cord shorter for a high neckline so the bib lies flat against the chest rather than standing away from it.

▾Care
  • Put the set on after perfume, makeup and skincare have settled — a bib sits exactly where perfume is usually heaviest
  • Remove it before bathing, swimming or exercising. Moisture is what stresses a join over time, and cotton thread holds damp longer than wood does
  • Wipe the wood gently with a soft, dry cloth after each wear
  • Store flat in the box or pouch provided, away from moisture, heat and direct sunlight — laying a bib flat keeps the rows from tangling
  • Handle by the metal findings and the cord rather than the wooden bars

Frequently asked questions

▾What is included in the Sanskriti set?

One pair of earrings and one bib necklace. Both are built from the same joined Ebony and Boxwood striped bars.

▾What is a bib necklace?

One that spreads across the upper chest rather than hanging as a single pendant — rows of elements stepping outward from the centre so the piece widens as it descends, sitting against the skin like a bib. It is worn as the statement of an outfit, not alongside another necklace.

▾Are the earrings the same as the Sanskriti earrings sold separately?

Not quite. The Sanskriti Wooden Earrings sold on their own have a small plain Boxwood round above the striped bar. The earrings in this set are the bar alone, so they sit quieter beside the bib necklace.

▾Are the stripes joined, inlaid or printed?

Joined. Separate strips of Ebony and Boxwood are bonded edge to edge and each bar is then shaped from the block, so the black runs all the way through the wood rather than sitting on the surface. Nothing is printed, painted or dyed.

▾What is the difference between joining and inlay?

Inlay cuts a channel into a solid piece and sets a strip of another wood into it, so the base stays whole and the lines can be very fine. Joining bonds separate pieces edge to edge and shapes the result as one object, giving broader bands that run right through. Both are skilled; they fail in different places — an inlay at the channel walls, a join at the seam.

▾Is the necklace adjustable?

Yes. A cotton bead slides along the cord that passes through it, so you set the length yourself and it holds. On a bib that is worth having — the piece needs to sit at the right height to lie flat rather than stand away from the chest.

▾What is the cord made of — is it leather?

Cotton thread, not leather. The adjuster is a cotton bead as well.

▾What is the dark piece hanging at the bottom?

Solid Ebony, plain and unstriped. It is the only element in the necklace that does not carry the pattern, which is what lets it close the piece rather than extend it.

▾Is the black and cream natural?

Yes. The black is Ebony and the cream is Boxwood — two different woods rather than one wood in two finishes. Nothing is dyed, stained or painted.

▾What does Sanskriti mean?

Culture. A column with vertical lines running down it is among the oldest decorative ideas in architecture, Indian and otherwise.

▾Is a wooden bib necklace heavy to wear?

Far less than it looks. A bib of this size in metal or stone would be a considerable weight on the neck; in Boxwood and Ebony the scale is visual rather than physical. The earrings are 10 g the pair, which is the same reason a bar of that length stays comfortable all day.

▾Will the joins come apart?

Not with ordinary wear. A properly prepared joint in dense hardwood is as strong as the surrounding wood. What stresses any join over time is moisture, which is the main reason to keep wooden jewellery dry.

▾What if it gets wet?

Please avoid it. Take the set off before bathing, swimming or exercising. If it does get damp, dry it with a soft cloth straight away and let it air fully before storing — the cotton cord takes longer to dry than the wood does.

▾What are the findings made of?

Metal alloy — hooks on the earrings and rings linking the bars of the necklace. The wood itself is bare Ebony and Boxwood with no plating or coating. If your skin reacts easily to metal, please write to us before ordering and we will help you decide.

▾Can I wear the earrings without the necklace?

Yes, and the plain bar is the easier of the two to wear on an ordinary day. The bib is the piece you put on when it is going to be the statement of the outfit.

▾Does a bib necklace suit a saree?

Very well, with a plain blouse and an open neckline. Black and cream hold up against handloom, khadi, linen and cotton in indigo, rust, mustard and black. What a bib does not want is a worked or embroidered neckline underneath it — the two compete and both lose.

▾Will my set look exactly like the photographs?

The design will match. The grain and the exact width of each stripe will vary, because Ebony and Boxwood differ from board to board — and across a necklace of many bars that variation is more visible, not less. It is what tells you the piece is wood rather than moulded material.
