One wood, no contrast, all shape

There is no second species here, no inlay, no banding and no painted colour. Every element — the square at the ear and each of the fifteen batons below it — is Ebony.

That leaves the design nowhere to hide. With nothing to look at but form, everything depends on proportion: the width of the square against the spread of the fringe, the length of each strand against the ones beside it, and how much space sits between them. Get any of those wrong and a monochrome piece reads as a clump rather than a fan.

Ebony is what makes it work at all. It is dense enough that the grain disappears entirely, so the eye reads pure silhouette instead of pattern — and dark enough that fifteen separate pieces still read as one object.

Graduated, not fringed

The strands are not the same length. The middle one falls longest, the pair beside it shorter, the outer pair shorter still — so the group forms a triangle beneath the square rather than a straight-edged curtain.

Kinkini weighs 10 g the pair: the same as a small wooden stud, spread across fifteen linked pieces and 8.5 cm of drop. The batons are turned thin and the square is a flat panel, so the whole thing hangs light. That is the entire reason a design like this is wearable in the first place.

How to style Kinkini Wooden Earrings

Wear the hair up. Not optional. Loose hair swallows the strands and the fan disappears, which is most of what you are wearing. A bun, a low knot or a pulled-back braid.

With a saree. Black is the one jewellery colour that never argues with a drape. Kinkini is at its best against a plain silk or a black-and-gold border, and equally strong on cream, ivory, maroon, wine and bottle green. Let it be the jewellery.
