Collection: Earrings for Saree

Handcrafted wooden earrings made to be worn with a saree. Feather-light at around 10 g a pair, with the colour the wood's own rather than a coat of paint — so you can wear a bold, full-size earring through a long function without your earlobes reminding you about it.

Why wood works with a saree  ▾

Wood sits differently against a drape than metal does. It absorbs light instead of flashing it, so it reads warm in daylight and soft under evening lamps — which is why it suits handloom, tussar, cotton and linen particularly well. It also holds its own against a heavily worked silk without competing, because the interest is in the grain and the craft rather than in shine.

Matching by saree  ▾
  • Handloom and cotton: Boxwood's honey gold, or Boxwood with fine Ebony inlay. Understated, and the grain shows.
  • Tussar and raw silk: Padauk's deep red against Boxwood — warm tones that echo the fabric's own texture.
  • Kanjivaram and heavy silk: plain Ebony. Black is the one thing that never argues with a rich border.
  • Black, maroon and deep green drapes: three-wood pieces, where Padauk carries the colour.
  • Cream, ivory and pastel: Ebony or Ebony-and-Boxwood, for contrast at the neckline.
  • Printed or striped sarees: keep the earring plain. A patterned drape and a patterned earring cancel each other out at conversation distance.
How the pieces are made  ▾

Six techniques run through this collection. Inlay cuts a channel into one wood and sets another inside it, polished flush. Joining bonds separate strips into a block which is only then shaped. Engraving draws the design into the surface by hand, with no undo. Carving works the form in three dimensions. Hand-painting adds a motif by brush, over the wood's own grain. Carving and filling cuts the lines first, then works colour down into them so it sits below the surface.

Common questions  ▾

Are wooden earrings suitable for a formal saree occasion?
Yes. Wood reads as craft rather than costume, which is why it works for weddings, pujas and receptions as readily as for a workday.

Will they be heavy with a heavy saree?
No. A pair weighs about 10 g. A metal earring of the same dimensions would weigh several times that.

Do the colours fade?
On bare-wood pieces there is no dye to fade — the tones are the woods' own and deepen slightly with age.

Will my pair look exactly like the photograph?
The design will match. The grain will not, because no two pieces of wood are alike.
