At the lobe, a solid crescent of deep red Padauk: a dome with a crescent cut from its base, so it stands on two points and sits close against the ear. Below it hangs a teardrop of pale Maple, ruled down its length with fine lines of Ebony.
Those lines are inlaid — each a thin strip of Ebony set into a channel cut in the Maple, then levelled and polished until the face is one smooth surface. Nothing is painted on.
Three woods, and each is doing something only it can. Padauk supplies a red it grows by itself. Ebony draws the lines. Maple gives them a pale field with a faint shimmer to sit on.
Oorja means energy. The warm red mass at the top and the light, ruled drop beneath it are the two halves of that idea. The pair weighs 10 g.

A crescent cut the other way up
Most crescents in jewellery hang with their points falling downward. This one is inverted: the curve is taken out of the base, so the mass sits at the top and the two points reach down towards the drop below. It gives the piece a weighted, settled feel at the ear rather than a falling one.
Cutting the inner curve is the difficulty. It has to mirror the outer dome cleanly, and the two points where they meet are where the wood is thinnest. Padauk holds them because it is dense and interlocked; a softer timber would crumble at the tips.
Inlay, and why it is not paint
A painted line sits on the surface and can rub, chip or lift with solvent. An inlaid line is solid Ebony running into the wood — there is nothing to lose, because the black is not on the piece, it is the piece.
The exacting part is the channel. Cut it a fraction wide and a pale seam appears alongside the black. On a teardrop the lines also have to stay true through a shape that narrows to a point, which is exactly where any drift becomes visible.
Where the red comes from
Padauk is one of the very few timbers that arrives at the bench already vividly coloured — a warm orange-red straight from the tree, no treatment involved. That is why it is also called African Coral Wood.
One honest note: Padauk deepens with time and light, moving from bright coral towards a richer brick red over months and years. It is not fading — it is the wood maturing, and most people find they prefer the older colour. Keeping the pair out of direct sunlight slows it.
How to style Oorja
- Sarees: beautiful with handloom, khadi, cotton and linen — and unusually good with mustard, rust, cream, olive and off-white, where the Padauk picks up the warmth in the drape
- Kurtas and ethnic sets: a plain cream, white or black kurta gives all three woods room to read
- Western wear: linen, neutrals, denim, monochrome dressing
- Festive and traditional occasions: the warm palette suits Durga Puja, Navratri, Diwali and daytime celebrations particularly well
Because Oorja already carries three tones and a fine line pattern, keep everything else quiet — no competing necklace, and ideally a solid outfit. Warm metallics sit better against it than silver.

- Remove them before bathing, swimming or exercising — moisture is what can loosen an inlay over years
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after each wear

- Handle by the metal findings, and take care of the crescent tips — they are the finest part of the piece

Inlaid. Each is a thin strip of Ebony set into a channel cut in the Maple, then levelled and polished flush. The face is smooth to the touch, and the lines cannot wear off because they are solid wood running into the piece.
▾Is the red colour natural or dyed?
Natural. The red is Padauk, also known as African Coral Wood, which grows that colour. The cream is Maple and the black is Ebony. Nothing in Oorja is dyed, stained or painted.
▾What is Padauk wood?
A dense tropical hardwood known for a vivid orange-red colour that comes from the timber itself rather than any finish. It is durable, takes a fine polish, and is one of the very few woods that can supply a bright colour without treatment.
▾Will the red fade?
It changes rather than fades. Padauk darkens with exposure to light and air, shifting from bright coral towards a deeper brick red. This is normal, it happens to all Padauk, and it is generally considered an improvement. Storing the pair away from direct sunlight slows it.

10 g the pair — light enough to wear through a full day, which is the practical reason wood suits statement designs better than metal does.
▾Can Oorja get wet?
Please avoid it. Moisture is what can loosen an inlay over years. Remove the earrings before bathing, swimming or exercising, and if they get damp, dry them with a soft cloth straight away and let them air fully.
▾Are the crescent tips fragile?
They are the finest part of the piece, so handle them with a little care. Padauk is dense enough to hold a fine point, and every pair is quality-checked. Normal wear is fine; a fall onto a hard floor is not.
