At the lobe, a solid crescent of deep red Padauk: a dome with a crescent cut from its base, so it stands on two points and sits close against the ear. Below it hangs a teardrop of pale Maple, ruled down its length with fine lines of Ebony.

Those lines are inlaid — each a thin strip of Ebony set into a channel cut in the Maple, then levelled and polished until the face is one smooth surface. Nothing is painted on.

Three woods, and each is doing something only it can. Padauk supplies a red it grows by itself. Ebony draws the lines. Maple gives them a pale field with a faint shimmer to sit on.

A crescent cut the other way up

Most crescents in jewellery hang with their points falling downward. This one is inverted: the curve is taken out of the base, so the mass sits at the top and the two points reach down towards the drop below. It gives the piece a weighted, settled feel at the ear rather than a falling one.

Cutting the inner curve is the difficulty. It has to mirror the outer dome cleanly, and the two points where they meet are where the wood is thinnest. Padauk holds them because it is dense and interlocked; a softer timber would crumble at the tips.

Inlay, and why it is not paint

A painted line sits on the surface and can rub, chip or lift with solvent. An inlaid line is solid Ebony running into the wood — there is nothing to lose, because the black is not on the piece, it is the piece.

The exacting part is the channel. Cut it a fraction wide and a pale seam appears alongside the black. On a teardrop the lines also have to stay true through a shape that narrows to a point, which is exactly where any drift becomes visible.

Where the red comes from

Padauk is one of the very few timbers that arrives at the bench already vividly coloured — a warm orange-red straight from the tree, no treatment involved. That is why it is also called African Coral Wood.

One honest note: Padauk deepens with time and light, moving from bright coral towards a richer brick red over months and years. It is not fading — it is the wood maturing, and most people find they prefer the older colour. Keeping the pair out of direct sunlight slows it.
