Two curves, cut differently

A crescent is the harder of the two shapes. It has an inner curve and an outer one that never run parallel, meeting at two fine points where the wood is thinnest and most likely to break. Padauk is dense and interlocked enough to hold those tips, which is why it is the wood at the top rather than the bottom.

The Maple oval is the simpler cut but the fussier finish: a continuous curve shows every flat spot, so the sanding has to be even the whole way round.
