A pale Maple oval, ruled down its length with fine lines of veneer.

Yamini is cut from Maple, the pale wood used for violin backs, sides and necks, which passes through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. It reaches us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The drop is a long oval, closing to a soft point at each end and curving gently along its length so it lies against the neck rather than standing away from it.

The lines are veneer set into the face: leaf-thin strips of wood laid in and polished back, so the surface finishes level and the lines are wood rather than ink. They run the length of the oval rather than across it, which is what makes the drop read taller than it measures.

On a single pale wood with no colour contrast to lean on, those lines are the entire design — which is why their spacing matters more here than on a piece with two woods doing the work.

Details ▾

Wood: Maple, responsibly repurposed exotic hardwood, with fine wood veneer lines.

Construction: cut veneer, laid and polished back.

Form: long oval drop, ruled lengthwise.

Pair weight: about 10 g.

Findings are metal alloy. Sold as one pair.

Handcrafted in Kolkata, India.

Styling ▾

Pale, warm and almost monochrome — these are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear that read as texture rather than pattern from any distance. Linen, cotton and handloom suit them particularly well.

Against dark clothing the pale oval stands out cleanly; against cream it almost disappears, which some people prefer.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing — a pale wood shows a mark more readily than a dark one.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Are the lines drawn on the wood? ▾

No. They are veneer — leaf-thin strips of wood laid into the face and polished back level. The surface is smooth to the touch and the lines cannot wear off.

Which wood is this? ▾

Maple, the pale wood used for violin backs, sides and necks. The colour is the wood's own, not bleached or stained.

Are these comfortable for daily wear? ▾

Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g and the oval is narrow, so there is nothing broad to swing or catch.

Are both earrings identical? ▾

Very close. The grain runs differently through each piece of wood, so the pair is matched rather than duplicated.

Will the pale wood darken? ▾

Slightly, over years. Maple warms rather than yellows, and keeping it out of direct sunlight slows the change.
