A Boxwood bud with a line of Ebony inlaid through it, running the way a vein runs through a leaf.
Woodhara is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The shape is a bud rather than a flat leaf — fuller at the middle, tapering at both ends, with a slight swell so it turns in the light instead of showing one face.
The vein is inlay. A channel is cut into the Boxwood, a strip of Ebony is seated into it, and the whole face is then sanded and polished back until both woods finish level. Run a fingertip along it and you feel nothing — no ridge, no edge. The line is inside the wood rather than on it, which is why it cannot lift or wear away.
One line doing the work of a whole leaf is the idea: no carving, no colour, nothing else on the surface.

Styling ▾
Pale, simple and quiet — these are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear with one piece of fine handwork to notice up close.
The leaf reference sits naturally against cotton, linen and handloom, and the single dark line keeps the pale wood from disappearing against light clothing.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing — a pale wood shows a mark more readily than a dark one.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the dark line painted on? ▾
No. It is a strip of Ebony set into a channel cut in the Boxwood and polished back level. Run a finger across and the surface is smooth — the line is wood, not ink, and it cannot wear off.
What is the difference between inlay and veneer? ▾
Inlay is cut into the wood and filled; veneer is laid on top of it. Woodhara is inlaid, which is why there is no edge to feel and nothing that could lift.
Are these comfortable for daily wear? ▾
Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g, the shape is narrow, and the surface is completely flush.
Are both earrings identical? ▾
Very close. The grain runs differently through each piece of wood, so the pair is matched rather than duplicated.
Will the pale wood darken? ▾
Slightly, over years. Boxwood deepens rather than fades, and keeping it out of direct sunlight slows the change.
