A domed Ebony disc above a Boxwood triangle ruled with fine diagonal lines of Ebony inlay.

Veidahi is made from two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces. The Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable, in pieces about the size of a pair of earrings. Read how the wood gets here.

The stud is a solid Ebony disc, domed rather than flat, so it catches light along a curve instead of a flat face. Beneath it hangs an inverted Boxwood triangle, its honey surface ruled with fine diagonal lines of Ebony inlay — narrow strips of the black wood set into the pale one, not drawn on. A metal ring joins the two.

Size and weight ▾

The hanging Boxwood triangle measures 5 cm. The pair weighs about 10 g.

That weight is the whole argument for wood: a triangle this size in metal would concentrate real load on one point of the earlobe, which is why bold metal earrings tend to come off halfway through an evening. These stay comfortable through a full working day or a long function.

Findings are metal alloy. Sold as a pair.

The two woods ▾

Ebony. The black hardwood used for violin fingerboards and tailpieces. Dense enough to sink in water, and it takes a polish like stone. The colour is the wood's own; nothing is stained or dyed.

Boxwood. Pale and so close-grained that it holds a cut line a fraction of a millimetre wide, which is why instrument makers use it for fittings. The honey tone is the wood deepened by cutting and polishing, not paint.

Styling ▾

At 5 cm the triangle reaches the line of the jaw, which is enough length to be seen in profile. A triangle is also a sharper shape than most wooden jewellery offers, so this pair reads as modern rather than folk.

It sits well with tailoring, a plain shirt and a linen dress, and equally against a handloom saree where the diagonal lines echo the weave. Hair up suits it; the shape disappears under hair worn down.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

How long are they? ▾

The hanging Boxwood triangle measures 5 cm. Added to the stud and the ring above it, the pair reaches the line of the jaw on most people.

Are the dark lines painted on? ▾

No. They are strips of Ebony set into the Boxwood. Run a finger across and the surface is smooth — the line is wood, not ink, and it cannot wear off.

Will it be too heavy for my ears? ▾

The pair weighs about 10 g, roughly the weight of two one-rupee coins split across both ears. Most people forget they are wearing them.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both the Ebony and the Boxwood darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.

Can I wear these every day? ▾

Yes. The woods were selected to survive decades of string tension on an instrument, so daily wear asks very little of them. Wipe them after use and keep them dry.
