A round Boxwood disc crossed by a grid of fine dark lines.
Vartika is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The lines are Ebony set into the Boxwood and polished back level — wood rather than ink, which is why the grid stays crisp where a drawn line would blur.
They run straight across in both directions, squaring off a circle. That is the whole idea of the piece: a grid is the most rigid pattern there is and a disc the least rigid shape, and setting one inside the other makes each more noticeable. The squares at the centre read as full squares; those at the rim are cut short by the curve.
Both colours are the woods' own. Nothing is stained or dyed.

Styling ▾
A disc is the easiest statement shape to wear — no points, no direction — and the grid gives it something to look at up close. These are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear that hold up for an evening.
The pattern is fine enough to read as texture from across a room, so the pair never looks busy.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Keep it dry — take it off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the grid drawn on the disc? ▾
No. Each line is Ebony set into the Boxwood and polished back level. The face is smooth to the touch, and because the lines are wood they cannot fade or wear off.
Why a grid on a circle? ▾
Because the two contradict each other. A grid is rigid and a disc is not, so each makes the other more noticeable — and the squares at the rim get cut short by the curve, which is what keeps the pattern from looking mechanical.
Are these comfortable for daily wear? ▾
Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g and the surface is flush, so there is nothing to catch.
Are both earrings identical? ▾
Very close. The grain runs differently through each piece of wood, so the pair is matched rather than duplicated.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
