A long bow shape at the ear, and below it a half-round banded across in two woods.

Vani is made from Boxwood, Padauk and Ebony, three of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards; the Padauk is the red hardwood from the same bench; the Boxwood is used for fittings and for the makers' own tools. All three reach us as offcuts from that work. Read how the wood gets here.

The upper element is a bow — but drawn long and narrow rather than tied into a knot, so it reads as two swept wings meeting at a waist. It sits close against the lobe and gives the piece a wider shoulder than a disc would.

The half-round below is built from two woods, joined. Separate pieces are cut and bonded side by side, then the whole face is polished back — so the bands of colour across it are different species of wood meeting at a join, not lines drawn on a single piece. Nothing is stained or painted.

A flat-topped half-round hanging under a swept bow is an unusually architectural pairing for wooden jewellery: one curve above, one below, and a straight edge between them.

Details ▾

Woods: Boxwood, Padauk and Ebony, responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods.

Construction: the woods cut and joined, then polished back.

Form: elongated bow above a banded half-round.

Pair weight: about 10 g.

Findings are metal alloy. Sold as one pair.

Handcrafted in Kolkata, India.

Styling ▾

Wide at the top and solid below, these are statement wooden earrings for weddings and festive wear — they hold their own against silk and gold work without adding any weight.

Wear with hair up and the neckline bare. A necklace at the same level will crowd the half-round.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight — Padauk's red deepens with light exposure.
  • Keep it dry — take it off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Are the bands painted on? ▾

No. Each band is a separate piece of wood, cut and joined to the one beside it and polished back. Every colour is a different species at its own natural colour.

Which woods are these? ▾

Boxwood, Padauk and Ebony — the pale, the red and the black, all from the same instrument workshop.

Are these suitable for a wedding? ▾

Yes. The scale reads as occasion jewellery, and at about 10 g the pair can be worn through a full day of functions.

Will earrings this size be heavy? ▾

The pair weighs about 10 g. A shape this broad in metal would pull on the earlobe within an hour.

Will the colours change over time? ▾

Slightly. Padauk deepens most, the others a little. Kept out of direct sunlight the piece ages evenly and holds its polish.
